Hi,
The Elecraft ordering page notes the Heil iC element version of the Pro Set headphones. I was looking at the Pro Set Elite (which isn't on the Elecraft site), and Heil's web page notes it's use mostly for Icom radios. I've found the AD-1K cable on the HRO site for these headsets. I was hoping anyone could comment on the Pro Set Elites w/ the K3, as well as a bit about the iC element. I was a bit concerned reading the "full range dynamic broadcast element" for doing CQ. Is this the right application for these headphones? ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
With due respect to the high regard of Heil sound products, through experiment, I often find that some computer boom headsets give very good performance but at a very low price.
In other words, in case you come across some computer boom headsets, by all means, give them a try and you may be surprised by their excellent value for money. I am currently using a computer headset which was bought in local computer store at USD 10. As an ex-user of Heil PR780 and Traveler dual set, I know what is meant by good audio. Finally, a careful adjustment of the TX/RX EQ, ALC and COMP in the K3 will warrant very good audio results. I sold my W2IHY 8 band equaliser for some time. The boom is something I could really do without as I'm happy w/ my
mic. I'm much more interested in the headphones themselves. I've been reading DX books and it would seem that most headphones are designed for high fidelity listening between 50 and 20,000 Hz. CW it says runs from 250 - 1000 Hz and SSB from 300 - 3000. It goes on to say that most transceivers generate white noise beyond 10000 and can be very tiring for a listener. So I was wondering if these Heil headphones are more meant for this type of application taking into account the above. Shane,
It is my firm belief that the audio response should be controlled by the transceiver, and not by the headphones or speakers (which should be wide-range). The more recent K3s (SN 3626 and above) contain the upgraded DSP board which has the audio Low Pass filter to roll off the AF response above 4 kHz installed. If you have an earlier K3, you can do the DSP board swap, or install the Low Pass Filter board to your existing K3 DSP board. You will find less expensive alternatives to the Heil headset in computer headsets and in the much acclaimed (here on this reflector) Yamaha CM500. I just purchased the CM500 from Sweetwater Sound for $29.95 With free shipping) - it was a demo unit at half the normal price. Heil products are overpriced for the function provided IMHO. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/11/2011 11:40 PM, Shane wrote: > The boom is something I could really do without as I'm happy w/ my > mic. While this was true of some older products (FT1000MP, some Ten Tec rigs, etc.) it is NOT true of well designed ham gear, like the K3. High fidelity headphones and loudspeakers are designed for SMOOTH (flat) frequency response, not only WIDE response, and the SMOOTHNESS is FAR more important in good communications quality and low listening fatigue. Before W6XU turned me on to the CM500, I used Sony MDR7506 and Etymotic Research ER4s, both very high quality, pro products. I strongly agree with W3FPR that Heil products are wildly overpriced, and offer NO advantages over fine products like the CM500. 73, Jim Brown K9YC Fellow, Audio Engineering Society ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

See my RFI tutorial for details of how to bias the electret. There's also info in the Power Point on Ham Interfacing. See the K2 manual for details of wiring of the mic connector. You'll need to make a simple cable adapter. Both of my pdfs list a source for cable-mount 1/8-in jacks, and you buy the connector for the K2 at ham vendors. http://audiosystemsgroup.com/publish.htm 73, Jim K9YC ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
