Problems with Power Output

Roy Morris-6
I do not believe there is anything wrong with either K2s or K3s that do not
put out a full 100 watts on the first SSB syllable.  I have built two K2s
and two K3s, and the ALC action is very similar on all of them.  Save your
time trying to do another transmit calibration.  I don't think it will solve
anything.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it!  Roy  W4WFB

Re: Problems with Power Output

Don Wilhelm-4
What Roy says is true.  The K2 and K3 use a closed control loop to
adjust power output.  It starts out at low power after a power on or a
band change or a change in the power requested - the actual output power
is measured and compared to the power requested, and the drive is
adjusted until the two match.
It does not take long to come up to the requested power level, but it
will not be with the first dit on CW nor the first few syllables on SSB.

Re: Problems with Power Output

Guys,

I may be imagining things, but this effect seems to always be there with
my K3.  My perception is that it is not just limited after band changes
or power level changes.  It is especially evident when running a big amp
that has a fast display of output power.

Where it may matter is in contesting.  You want them to copy the first
letter of your call right the first time.  You want the first dit/dah to
be loud.

Yes, my K3 has been through the RF power calibration.

I'm going to have to look closer at this.

Re: Problems with Power Output

N5GE-2

My experience is that once the power has been managed as Don say's, there is no
more ramp-up.  I use only CW and after the ramp-up the first dit is at full
output.

I'm using the KPA500 here.

Hi Brian,

The problem you described after band changes or power level changes is ABSOLUTELY a function of the TX gain setting. But the automatic setup through the K3 utility might not solve the problem for you. In that case you have to do a manual adjust. I had to do this on two bands for my amplifier.

You can review the manual setting procedure at the top of page 62 in the K3 manual in the CONFIG:TXGN area of the configuration summary. You have to first turn off CONFIG:TX ALC before you can make the manual adjustment. Don't forget to turn it back on.

You may be right.  I do lots of S&P which more often than not includes a
band change.  Perhaps it is the band change effect I'm seeing.

Re: Problems with Power Output

N5GE-2
Brian e al,

I too believe that is the case, because I have noticed that when I change bands
the ramp up occurs.  When that occurs I send DE N5GE QRL ? and after that I get
full output.  This is especially noticeable on the MARS frequencies I operate
on.
