My K2 just started with these issues yesterday.
Does anyone have any suggestion other than sending the rig to Elecraft? When I power the K2 up, it is like it has no antenna connection (I have the KAT 100 external tuner that I use with the rig). When I also power up only a few of the letters for ELECRAFT appear on the LED Screen. Maybe 3 or 4 letters only and the S meter has three bars then a few blank and then 2 filled in. The rig sounds like it is almost muted or at times no audio. Also when I power up, the KAT 100 shows the rig in the low power position even though I have the pot set for 100 watts. It can take me about 5 to 10 minutes of turning the rig on and off until it will then function normally. Once normal it is fine unless the rig is off for about an hour. If I turn the rig off for an hour and come back to it it will not start normally and I have the same issues all over again. I have checked all of my connections into the rig especially the power connections and antenna connections. It kind of reminds me if I had an IC that was somehow failing somewhere? Exactly what appears on the L*C*D screen is important, as one of the uses of the ELECRAFT display is to indicate exactly how far the rig got through the self test before failing. Unfortunately, the codes for this are not published. Are there separate error codes for self test from those listed in the Owners
manual - Appendix E Troubleshooting - Error codes with the problem defined and the troubleshooting steps? 73, Jim ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Woolley (E.L)" <[hidden email]> To: "Elecraft" <[hidden email]> Sent: Monday, March 31, 2008 5:23 AM Subject: [Elecraft] K2 fails to start - partial "Elecraft" display, no signal(was:Problems with my K2 --- can anyone help??) > Norm Klieman wrote: > > > > When I power the K2 up, it is like it has no antenna > > connection (I have the KAT 100 external tuner that I > > In trying to improve the subject, I've assumed that you have no received > signal, but I'm not completely sure what you mean by like not having an > antenna connection. > > > use with the rig). One of the things I found was if the front panel is too far in it will short out. (On something...)
To fix the problem, I "re-nested" the 2-D fasteners after finding the front panels sweet spot. Basically, loosen the screws a little then pull out on the front panel. Try and power up the radio and see if the problem goes away. If it does, torque down the screws there. You may have to reposition the panels to close any gaps. Mine had similar symptoms to what yours is having. BTW, I just found out that UPS ground shipping with insurance to Elecraft is about $48!!! I think I got ripped off! I just hope the repairs are simple! 73, Damon KC5CQW

I had similar problem during the build of my 2nd K2. I had the experience
during the First test stage - very few parts on RF Board. Consequently I re-soldered many pads on the FP and Cont boards, to no avail. I discovered that I could press DISPLAY button and Menu button and get mainly correct responses, but no tuning. All voltage and resistance tests were OK. I resorted to doing a RESET on the EEPROM (press 4+5+6 simultaneously while turning ON power). After that, all has been well since. If you do a reset you will loose some EEPROM F/W setting you have made - filter configs, etc. Check the supply voltage first, just in case it is falling too low. If the problem persists after reset and/or if it works but becomes intermittent, you should re seat the FP and Control boards in their connectors and consider inspecting/re soldering control board pads. 73 es Good Luck, Al WA6VNN In a message dated 3/30/2008 6:37:47 P.M. As I understand it, the Elecraft message is built up incrementally as the early intialisation proceeds, so, if that initialisation crashes or stalls, you can tell how far it got. I suspect the rig will freeze with the partial Elecraft, so if it does not, the partial message may be indicative of a problem in the hardware associated with the display, or in the AUXBus communication between the main micro-controller and the display controller. -- David Woolley Emails are not formal business letters, whatever businesses may want. RFC1855 says there should be an address here, but, in a world of spam, that is no longer good advice, as archive address hiding may not work. _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
