Put your K3 on 6M tonight

James Duffey
The 6M Spring Sprint is this evening, < http://www.sysadnet.com/vhfsprintrules.htm
  > , so get that K3 on 6M and have some fun. the Sprint runs this
evening from 2300Z May 9 to 0300Z May 10. You will need to exchange
your grid square, a close approximation which you can find on QRZ.com.

It is the beginning of the Sporadic E season, so the band may open for
some DX. Even if it doesn't, there is usually enough local activity to
make it fun. If that weak SSB station doesn't come back to you, call
on CW. Most VHF ops will come back to you.

While a dedicated 6M antenna is best, a simple dipole will work, some
HF antennas will load OK on 6M. A 40M dipole will be near resonance on
its 7th harmonic on 6M. Try the K3 tuner.

If you have never been on 6M before, this is a good time to see how
the band works, who is on, and pick up a few grids.

I will be in DM66ff operating portable. Look for me. - Duffey

THANKS JAMES.  The new moxon is built and up at 30ft. or so.  This should be a good test if it is working properly...

Last year about this time, Duffy "shamed" me into building a
6 meter Moxon in anticipation of this sprint event.  It
wasn't really very hard to build, and it works great!  I
even took it up our 9000 ft. nearby mountain and operated as
a rover.  I'm sorely tempted to do the same thing again,
since the temperature here in the desert right now is 100+,
and it only takes about 45 minutes to get from my house to
the top of Mt. Lemmon where it's considerably cooler.  But
my daughter is flying in shortly (it's Mother's Day tomorrow
in case any of you forgot to buy something!), so I'll have
to just operate from the house.  Still, I can get the Moxon
up about 25 feet, so maybe I'll hear something!  So, keep an
ear open for DM42!

Grid square / QRZ.com caution

Ken Kopp-3
In reply to this post by W5CEM
Hi Cleve,

It -may- be EM12ox -but- since your QRZ address is a
PO box it's likely computed to somewhere -other- than
your actual location.  It would be a rare case where the
last two"digits" would be of importance for the sake of
the VUCC award.

I've found that many QRZ.com grids are not correct, and
often are off by miles!  I took my LAT and LONG from the
GPS in the car parked in the driveway and then corrected
them on QRZ.  Now the QRZ map literally points to the car
in the driveway. (:-))

Re: Grid Square Locator

David Gilbert

If you're not sure of your own grid square, or want to know someone
else's, or want to know where a particular grid square is, you might try
this free Google Maps overlay from F6FVY:

http://f6fvy.free.fr/qthLocator/fullScreen.php

It will work either way ... click on the map to find a grid square, or
enter a grid square in the box at the bottom to go to that location.

Any suggestions for the best frequency to listen for CW activity?

I have a K3, an HF beam which shows a 2.5:1 SWR on 6 (tunable to 1:1, of course) and I've
never had a 6 meter QSO in 53 years as a ham!

Grid squares on QRZ.com (unless corrected by the individual user) are computed
on the basis of your ZIP code. You should regard them as approximations only,
and go into QRZ and correct your long/lat coordinates as Ken did.

Re: Put your K3 on 6M tonight

Bill VanAlstyne W5WVO
In reply to this post by Vic K2VCO
It is still a little in advance of the usual start of the summer sporadic-E
season, so it is unlikely (though possible) that 6 meters will be open anywhere
tonight. (Strange timing for a 6-meter contest; don't really get it. Why not
wait for a couple more weeks when the band is more likely to be open?)

To answer your question, CW activity when the band is dead is usually right on
the calling frequency 50.125. When the band is open, CW activity generally drops
down to 50.100 and below. But don't expect to find anybody there if the band
isn't open.

6 meters is a really fun band, but it won't be really fun until it starts to
open on a regular basis in a couple more weeks. Don't judge it until then!
