Can anyone suggest reasonably costing plain-vanilla
earphones for ham use? What 2007 headphones are available out there - be it WMart, RShack, or Bose? What quality, not WWII vintage, earphones are good performers for K2, IC-706MKIIG, or IC-7000 type ham rigs? I'm not searching for Western Electric WWII headphones. I suspect there is one or 2 models out there, that we can all afford. What impedance am I looking for? Gosh, just about any modern comfortable headphones will work FB. Most
low-cost phones have an impedance of about 50 ohms that works FB with the Elecraft rigs. For a long time, "hi-fi" phones had an impedance of about 8 or 16 ohms to be used with audio gear. The preferred impedance seems to have gone up with the popularity of portable music players such as the "Walkman". Let's see, what's hanging on the phones jack of my K2 at the moment are some inexpensive Radio Shack phones, "Nova 56". I think they're about a decade old now <G>. I've got some inexpensive LabTek phones around here somewhere too... Actually, I think you'd find that the old WWII type phones wouldn't work. Most of those phones were very high-impedance: about 2,000 ohms. I've not tried them with any Elecraft rigs, but I think you'd find the audio level disappointing if you can hear anything at all! Wal-Mart sells a set of Sony's that I really like. Have leathette stuff
on the ear pieces that are soft and comfortable. It comes with the 1/8" plug but includes a 1/4" adapter. For $20 you can't beat it. I use them quite a bit. If they get lost or broken I am only out $20, but I have an extra adapter. ;-) David Wilburn [hidden email] Fred (FL) wrote: > Can anyone suggest reasonably costing plain-vanilla > earphones for ham use? I concur with the Labtec headphones. I probably have four or five pair
around here. They work well with the K2 and most of the other rigs I have. I wore them last field day for much of the 24 hour period with little discomfort, at least for me. And for the price, they're practically disposable if something happens to them! 73 de John, WB4GLJ > > I bought a pair of Labtec Icon-750 from < > URL:http://www.goldmine-elec-products.com/prodinfo.asp?number=G13112 > and > have been pleasantly surprised by them, especially considering they are > only $8.95! Dave - I bought a pair of those WMART Sony $16
headphones. Can't miss at that price, and they seem to have some quality too. Beside K2, I also have a IC-7000, and hope they work OK with it too. Thanks! The advantage--limited frequency response. 5k-10kHz max depending on the model. The benefit less high frequency noise/hiss resulting in less hear fatigue. One you've tried a good communication headphone you'll never go back. -- 73, Rod Ai7NN _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Eric Scace K3NA has an article in the current issue of the National
Contest Journal (Jan/Feb 2007, pp. 7-10.) about headphones for contesting. His contention is that the best headphone solution provides complete passive audio isolation from noises in the environment, with perfect, distortion-free audio from the radio. What he determined worked best for him were custom-molded in-ear monitors (such as the kind used by professional concert musicians) and high-isolation, deep shelf industrial earmuffs. The custom-molded in-ear monitors are not cheap and not exactly what the original poster of this thread has in mind, I'm sure... -- Kenneth E. Fred,
I have used the JRC ST-3 headphones for over 10 years now (from my SWL days) and they are still the most comfortable (physical and audio) I have ever used. The 600 ohm impedance is not a problem with my K1 or my Yaesu FT-920. http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/404 Regards, Ken S. - N4OI ------------------------------ Message: 19 Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2007 16:43:57 -0800 (PST) From: "Fred (FL)" <[hidden email]> Subject: [Elecraft] Quality Ham Headphones? I also use the JRC ST-3 and love them. Bought them some years ago from
Universal Radio. They are classic communications phones - mono with a 1/4 inch plug. Optimized for communications - NOT Hi-Fi. Extremely comfortable - no physical or listening fatigue after 24 hours of CW SS. Highly recommended. 73 ... Keep in mind, Labtec also sells boom mic headsets .... which takes
care of another requirement a microphone. They are sold as computer headsets , but have a nice electret element , just perfect for the K2 or icom radios. Some of the headsets even have the nice leatherlike ear cushions... Altec ....( Sparkomatic , the cars stereo people bought the Altec name for consumer products) sold a bunch of nice headsets... which appear to be discontinued and sold off to some closeout houses... http://www.costcentral.com/product-list/Headsets_Microphones/170/Altec_Lansing_Technologies/Z00396/ if you handy with a soldering iron , make a box to interface the headset mic plugs to go into a 8 pin foster plug. That way any of the computer headsets will be pluggable. The headphones will plug right in....just the mic plug needs to be adapted/interfaced,,,, If it is an electret mic element ( and they usually are ) the level will be fine!. My computer headset fits into my K@ pelican case for "vacations." bill ny9h _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Let me cast a vote for earbuds. They are light and for me at least,
very comfortable. Radio Shack sells a cheapie at $10 and they come with a little wind-up carrying case to-boot! I have three pairs, one for the TV in the bedroom at night, one for the K2 in the living room, and one for my house up in Eureka. For $10, why haul them around? I sure like the fit in my ear on these and the sound too. I have often wished I could monitor the output of the IF of my K2. I have
often done this with a small oscilloscope when using my boatanchor receivers and have found it very handy for analyzing received CW and SSB signals. I know I could hack into the K2 and find a way to bring out the IF without disturbing receiver function too badly but hope somebody out in Elecraftland can save me some of the painful learning experiences I would no doubt encounter if inventing it all from scratch. Don:
You might wish to consider my Z10000 buffer amplifier design. It's usually attached ahead of the selective stages as it's intended purpose is to provide an isolated IF signal sample for the Z90/Z91 panadapter. However, it could be attached at a different point in the IF chain. You can read about it at www.cliftonlaboratories.com Some degree of caution has to be exercised in making these samples, as there are lots of signals floating around inside the K2 and one wants to keep them out of places they don't belong, so cable routing, lead length, etc. is important. The only configuration that I have tested involves a wideband sample at the output of the 2N5109 post-mixer amplifier.
