Quick Split revisited (John Lawrence W1QS)

john lawrence-3

Thanks for all the interesting comments to my "not so Quick Split" post.  At the end of the day I'm still left believing that in the Split configuration displayed with TX on VFO B and RX on the larger VFO A, that there should be a way to always display the transmit frequency and especially while transmitting.  In fact, unless I'm missing something as a newbie to the K3, the transmit frequency is not displayed while transmitting on CW and may not be displayed in the VFO B area while sitting idle.  On my K3 the CW text decoder is in the VFO B display area of the LCD unless I touch the VFO B knob.  An option that would allow the CW decoder to be shut off so the transmit frequency can be displayed would be a fix that might wake me (us?) up before actually transmitting on an unintended frequency.   The text decoder is a nice feature but probably isn't as important to CW DXer's during the heat of chasing a hot one.  On SSB the transmit frequency is always displayed on VFO B thus th
 is issue goes away.

The other split method using the RIT/XIT buttons does switch to displaying the XIT frequency when on the air.  I don't like to use this split method because it's too quick for me and I find transmitting on the wrong frequency is a greater posibility.

I'm sure to get it someday but in the meantime my appologies for keeping the LID police busier than I should.  Being old fashion, liking to know where I am transmitting all the time is comforting.

Sorry

I guess my message wasn't clear.  Sorry.  I agree with your details on the graphical display however the actual TX frequency isn't displayed when in the conventional split mode.  That was my point NOT the details on the "clues" via that little arrow pointing to VFO B and the yellow light for delta F.  They only tell you that you are in split mode not where you're transmitting.  Get it?

John,

I understand your concern.  But some K3 users want to use text decode on
TX to see how their keying is being interpreted, and if you set text
decode for both reception and transmit, it does take over the VFO B
area.  There is just no 3rd place to display variable data on the K3
display.
'Tis a predicament - some what to monitor their sending during transmit
and you want the text display to stop.  Perhaps Wayne and Lyle will
consider making another selection in the TEXT DECODE 'menu' selections
to decode during receive only, but until that is considered and acted
upon you may have to alter your operation or simply turn off text decode.

Both the transmit and receive frequencies are displayed *except* when in
SPLIT *and* the TEXT DECODE is on.  If TEXT DECODE is off, when in
split, the transmit frequency is clearly displayed in VFO B and the
pointer for the display TX icon points downward to VFO B.  If split is
off, the pointer is upward to VFO A, and if XIT is on, you will see the
frequency in the VFO A area change when you transmit (unless the XIT
offset is zero).

If you must use text decode when running split and need to explicitly
see the transmit frequency, may I suggest that you use XIT instead of
split.  The transmit frequency will show up in VFO A when you transmit.
If you want to listen to your transmit frequency, just tap RIT and the
receive frequency will move to your transmit frequency so you can
listen, then tap RIT again to listen to the DX.  The K3 RIT/XIT range is
+/- 9.99 kHz which will cover most DX offsets.

Hi John,

Ummmm, you CAN turn the CW decoder off.  Hold the TEXT DEC button and
then turn the VFO-B knob until it says OFF in the VFO-B area.  Or am I
not understanding what you're asking for?

Ah, you can quell the text decoded display to revert to the VFO B (which
is default, I think).  Text decode is not default.

As Don pointed out there's two data items and one peice of UI real estate
to show them.  Tough decision.

When I run split and using the decode to text, the VFO B will revert to
the Tx frequency when the decode is idle.  As soon as more signal (or
noise) kicks in then the decode text overtakes the VFO B as you found.

There's not enough visual real estate to show the two pieces of data in
the same rect simultaneously.  The text-decode is a killer app for the K3,
too bad it doesn't have it's own dedicated real estate in the UI.

When the decode is running furiously and I want to double check the Tx
frequency, I just tap A/B, read it off quickly, and tap A/B again.

Or I can just roll VFO B a smidge to make it render..

I  took an Elecraft PR6 in trade with some other stuff. It was still in the unopened Priority Mail box from Elecraft to the Ham who traded it to me. He had not opened it. Naturally I opened it to be sure it was in the box and it’s there with the instructions. So it is as new. Anyone who wants it I will ship it to them priority mail for $120. Conus only.

Please reply off the list.
