RE: Interfacing with computers

Yep. Serial to USB adapters are available wherever you find computer
accessories.

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!

If you use a common "Serial Port" cable to hook your K2 to your computer,
you'll destroy the K2 port! The K2 handles serial data, all right,  but the
pin-out isn't directly compatible with common computer serial ports. That's
why it says "AUX I/O" and not "RS-232"  or "SERIAL PORT".

Check the documentation for the KIO2 interface (with the KIO2 or KPA100
manual) to see how to hook things up.

Heh, heh... That "Warning, warn...." reminds me of Robbie the Robot on "Lost
in Space" back when our rigs glowed in the dark and kept our hands and
coffee warm <G>.

Fellow Elecrafters:

I notice that many of these new fangled computers no longer have
serial ports. They typically have USB ports. On the other hand, radio
gear such as the K2 has a port that looks a lot like a serial port.
How are they mated up; is there such a thing as a USB/serial convertor?

Steve

RE: Interfacing with computers

Steven Pituch
Hi Steve,
Down here in Texas the Winlink Gurus consider the Gold-X brand usb to serial
adapter to be very compatible.  I run two off of my laptop with never a
problem.
GMUX-1200.
Its here at:
http://www.goldxproducts.com/showproduct.asp?pid=GXMU-1200

The $48 TNC-X kit I just made to use with Winlink has a usb adapter option
for it for only $20
http://www.tnc-x.com/

I think USB is the way to go.  Still hams around here say its better to buy
an old laptop with serial ports, but the adapters work fine, and I like my
new but very basic laptop with just USB and no serial ports.

Reagrds,
Steve, W2MY

Subject: USB to serial ports/ WARNING, WARNING, WILL ROBINSON!
Not sure about elecraft and the serial interface, I have one #4529, that
works fine on serial.  However, here is a good site for operators that would
like to learn about usb to serial, courtesy of Don, AA5AU :
http://www.rttycontesting.com/usb

I have a couple of store bought serial to usb interfaces that I could test
with my K2, if that would help.  Let me know, Dave, NC6P.
