In response to Tom’s question, I offer the following,
which may be controversial. But, the probably shouldn’t be as the differences
I noted were not major.
I have 4 radios that I provided with the same antenna at the
same time. I tuned in a strong AM shortwave station and then a weak AM
shortwave station. I feed the all the audios into the same mixer –
amplifier – speaker chain. I used the mixer to switch between
radios to compare how the audio sounded. I used my 38 year old daughter
as the judge of how the radios sounded. She did not know which radio was
which, she just reported did “A” sound better than “B”.
We tested 4 computer controlled radios – the results on sound, best to
worst (her preference) were K3, then TT331 (pretty much a RX340), AOR7030+,
QS1R. I would rate the 331 lower, but again, these four radios are very
close.
I love the QS1R panadapter, and for the money it more than
holds its own. But, it requires some audio attachments and a
computer (so does the 331).
