Dave,
Tell me with a straight face that you never overshoot a mode and end up at something other then CW/SSB. Also throw in AM or FM into the mix and now you have 3 modes which are not sequential. Besides, your algorithm actually requires one to remember something. Since you can't see the modes you're not in, is the direction up or down? Mind clutter is something you learn to avoid as you age. Up down buttons to me have always been a game of roulette anyhow. Sometimes you stop where you want, sometimes not. 73 de Brian/K3KO

I think the modes are arranged in order of popularity with SSB being at the
top and FM at the bottom. A bit of manual dexterity is also good for >arthritic joints. > >73 After looking closely at the K3 I decided there are a lot of things I'd like to see changed on the LCD: 1. I'd like for the filter width indicator to be where the VFO B frequency readout is and shift the other indicators in that row to the left to make it fit, because I prefer looking at it through my dominant eye which is my right eye. 2. I'd like for CMP to have a label for 5 dB, because I don't like to have to interpolate the distance between zero and ten. 3. I'd like for the S-Meter to have a maximum reading of 80.5 dB in .5 dB steps, because I have a neighbor 2 miles away that tells me I should be able to resolve his signal strength accurately. As it is I can only watch him peg the meter when he is working DX. 4. Since I almost always work CW, I wonder if you could add a feature to disable all the other modes so I won't be able to accidentally use them or have to step through them. It would be nice if I could use the menu to select one of the other modes if I really do want to use it. You could make the mode selectable from the Config Menu by rotating the B VFO to the mode and selecting YES to make it available from the MODE button. I feel this is a reasonable request and it shouldn't take more than a few days to do the necessary modifications. Disclaimer: All of the above is said with tongue in cheek and in no way is meant upset or belittle anyone. Fiddle with your LCD viewing angle until you CAN see the modes you're
not in... Then you can easily tell what direction to go without having to learn anything new. Why not put our brain's memory function to work and memorize where each mode is from top to bottom on the K3 display? Then we will know whether to press UP or DOWN to change modes.

Well George, some of us are rote memory folks and some of us are "figure it out" folks.
Both types are needed in this world. I guess you're in the rote memory column. Get a little older, memorize the order (a useless thing to spend brain resources on in my opinion) and come back in two weeks of not using the radio. See if you still remember the order. 73 de Brian/K3KO

This is why you can simply change your LCD viewing angle setting and
make it to where the unused LCD segments are just barely visible. Then you can easily see where you are going and what each direction button will do for you. Seems like this topic has been a bit of a "dead horse" for a while already. Can't we agree that everyone's got their own operating style, and some may benefit from a feature, even if others can't see a need for it? It seems like the feature should be reasonably easy to implement in a firmware enhancement, and wouldn't hurt those who don't see the need. This sort of flexibility is one of the great features of the K3. I'm sure it's on the wish-list by now anyway. Time to move on? ~Iain Brett Howard wrote on 07/24/08 11:26: > This is why you can simply change your LCD viewing angle setting and > make it to where the unused LCD segments are just barely visible. > Then you can easily see where you are going and what each direction > button will do for you. > > On Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 9:05 AM, alsopb <[hidden email]> wrote: >> Well George, some of us are rote memory folks and some of us are "figure it >> out" folks. >> >> Both types are needed in this world. >> I guess you're in the rote memory column. >> >> Get a little older, memorize the order (a useless thing to spend brain >> resources on in my opinion) and come back in two weeks of not using the >> radio.
