Gosh, having not been too involved with Elecraft
products until I saw the K3 at Dayton, it amazes me to
see how many hams seem to never be completely
satisfied with a product or, always want more. If you
think back to what optional filters for radios of the
past cost.....Icom FL-52 and FL-53 for
example.....They still sell used for more than the
Elecraft filters. The CW filters for an FT-2000 cost
around $150 and the radio costs more than a K3. So, to
me, Elecraft filters at $79 and $120 seem like a
bargain.
Also, from what I've read on here, it doesn't seem
like a lot of filters are required for superb
performance. I know the FM and AM filters are required
for those modes of operation. However, I'm not buying
a K3 for AM or FM operation. I'm buying mine for low
band CW operation. If I want to add those other modes
later, I don't think the price of the filters will
bankrupt me. (I doubt I'll ever add AM or FM though)
At any rate, I'm looking forward to getting my K3 in
the 2nd production run, equiped with a couple of
reasonably priced filters for CW operation, and then
waiting for the second receiver to be available. Also,
don't forget there was talk about variable filters
down the road. I'm sure they will be reasonably priced
too.
How many radio manufacturers offer the number and
variety of filter choices we are seeing with the K3?
The operative word in the statement that triggered
this response was "cheap". I know hams seems to have a
reputation for being cheap. It would be nice to
squelch that stigma. I don't want anything "cheap" in
my K3. Perhaps those looking for cheaper radios should
design their own.
