That sounds like the AGC isn't functioning. I had a
similar problem on #5471 a couple of months after
completion. I didn't notice the current draw, so I
don't know if that is some other problem.
The symptoms were no S meter action, no matter how
strong the signal, and of course, the volume would
vary considerably with changes in signal strength.
Sometimes, after an hour or two, the S meter would
start to function again, and the AGC would return to
normal.
There is a section in the K2 manual, Appendix E
Troubleshooting, section 114 AGC or S meter not
working, that helped me to diagnose the problem. I
found that the AGC oscillator section of U1 was not
starting reliably. I followed the recommendation to
add a 22k resistor from pin 7 to pin 3 of U1, and the
oscillator starts every time now.
