Before making up more cables, does anyone know what the compatibility is of various Elecraft RS-232 cables? In other words, can I use the same cable with my W1, W2, XG-3, and KX3? These would be cables with a 3.5mm stereo plug on one end and a DB-9 on the other. If not all are compatible, which ones can be shared?
Thanks, Eric WD6DBM ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Yes. And the KAT500 as well

Eric,
All those you mentioned use the 3.5mm stereo connection containing TXD, RXD and Signal Ground. Al; those devices can share the same cable. The K2 needs a special cable with a DE-9 connector that has only TXD, RXD and Signal Ground. Do not use a standard serial cable with the K2, damage to the K2 can result. Note that the K2 DE-9 connector is labeled AUX I/O rather than RS-232 - there are unique K2 internal signals in that connector as well as the 2 RS-232 lines. The K3 has a DE-9 connector and is labeled RS-232, so you can use a standard serial cable with the K3. I think that covers most cases of the Elecraft gear and the RS-232 connections. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/8/2012 5:33 PM, eric norris wrote: > Before making up more cables, does anyone know what the compatibility is of various Elecraft RS-232 cables? Electrically, are the "real" RS-232 (+/- 12V) or TTL level (0 / 5 V)?

They work well with regular 232 port, so I assume that is what they are.
Don't know the exact voltage swing, probably could work fine with quite a bit less than +/-12V, but real 232, not TTL. Jon,
In the K2 and K3, the levels are "real RS-232", For the others, while they will tolerate up to the maximum RS-232 levels (+/- 25 volts) the driving signal will not go negative, and the positive excursion is only 5 volts. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/9/2012 3:38 AM, Jon K Hellan wrote: > Electrically, are the "real" RS-232 (+/- 12V) or TTL level (0 / 5 V)? > > Jon LA4RT > > ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
