I've been playing with a 43' vertical for a year or so now.
My best setup so far has been raising the base up 24' off the ground.
I purchased a telescoping flag-pole to get it up there.
I have 24 1/8w radials....the location where it is cant handle longer.
I run 40' of RG213 from the vertical to a kw 1:1 balun.
Then another 50' of RG213 to the shack.
The balun made a ***HUGE*** difference in lowering noise level.
My doublet up 45' was beating the vertical until I installed the balun.
Now the vertical hears stations much better than the doublet.
This summer I'm installing a used 35' tower to put the vertical on with
4 1/4 wave radials for 40m.
Its starting to be a pretty effective DX antenna, so I'm happy to play
around testing more setups.
