Well, I just hate it when I'm sure I have a truly obscure question that
maybe only one or two other people in the world can answer, and a great
number reply either:
1. "Google 'Lionel' and 'J-36', or
2. Search eBay
or both. Why don't I ever think of that?
Thanks to all the replies, direct and via the reflector. I found a
picture of my beloved Lionel bug on a collector's website, complete with
label, the trunion plate, and the square weight ... label just a little
bit peeled but readable. I was unaware that mine wasn't a standard
Signal Corps metal plate ... it seemed like metal, but may have been
some sort of metalized tape, teenagers weren't terribly focused in those
days, like they are today.
My wife saw the picture and said "It isn't chrome, it looks like very
shiny brass." I'm colorblind, I think I'll stick with my version.
At any rate, the last Lionel on eBay went for $40, which is only 800%
inflation since 1955 and I think my hobby budget will handle something
in that range.
Thanks again and Happy Christmas Holidays to all,

PS: I definitely will do SKN after all the uproar on the reflector!
