I am surprised, and somewhat disillusioned to hear ‘questioning voices’
along the lines of modifying the K2 radio design! I do believe there is even a portion of the company’s main page where they recommend the radio, just because SINCE YOU BUILT IT, you will be well acquainted to improve upon its design! Anyone that has ever designed any circuit device knows that there is always Revision A, Revision B, revision C etc. This is true of simple “DC” circuits, and is more likely with “AC” circuits. Besides, it has already come to the fore that there are certain design deficiencies! I don’t fault the manufacturers for this, its simply bound to happen! So, fire up the soldering irons guys. Make your design modifications, and document them! That’s why you got a Ham license right, so as to get into the nitty gritty of electronics and radio science? ……………………………… ...................................................................................................... Many of the improvements in the current K2's are just the result of individuals deciding to make it "better", and they did. And for those mods that didn't really pan out, they might not have been added to the production design but you know a lot was learned trying and testing them. Elecraft has a policy of supporting tinkerers! I've been on the bands for over half a century, and I've yet to own a rig for HF that I didn't build myself - from my own design, from something in a construction article or from a kit. And the only VHF/UHF rigs I didn't build are a couple of hand-helds I've owned over the years. That's no everyone's "cup of tea" I understand, but for those with an itch to tinker, never give up scratching it. Every rig I've ever owned, including K2 S/N 1289 and KX1 S/N 0004 are works "in progress". Keep a notebook. I have a ring binder for each rig. Take the time to put your thoughts, copies of ideas from others, and the circuits and data from any tests you have run or mods you try. It's what all engineers do, professional and amateur. It gives you a running commentary of your flights of fancy and your frustrations! Figuring out how to measure an "improvement" of some sort is often the most challenging thing for those without an electronics lab in their shop.
