Make a bad purchase good?
Bought a KX-2 off the internet and have found that it is missing several of the screws that held the end plates on. Asked about that and the seller said he tried to put some sort of protective end plates onto the radio but couldn’t do it so threw them away and put the original end plates back on. What concerns me about just going to the hardware store and getting more screws (that might not be the proper thread/length) is I think two of the screws held the final output transistors onto that end plate which I assume was for that end plate to act as a heatsink. The seller said he used the radio and it seemed to be ok but I am concerned about the lack of heatsink/output transistor integrity and any possible damage. Maybe I’m on the wrong track here because of never seeing a KX-2 before. The radio looks good - no scratches or dings and the seller told me to find out what is needed to be done to fix it and he’d send that to me. Any help on this concern would be appreciated. F.Y.I - the serial number is 03742 and the Firmware is REF5. If you have any of the remaining screws then take one to the hardware store when you go. They will do a perfect match for you. They use an aluminum template folds referred to as a Screw Checker to make sure it is correct. The sis not an “eyeball exercise.” There is nothing about that screw usage that is demanding in terms of material science, etc.

Sounds like the seller was a sucker for aftermarket stuff. Elecraft products are well designed. The screws are all standard English units. Most of are 4-40, smaller ones are 2-56. I've NEVER thrown away screws -- I probably have close to a thousand, sorted into plastic drawers by size. You may want to verify whether Elecraft specifies Thermal Material where the transistors attach.
My K3 and K3s both do. I highly recommend that you get the proper screws from Elecraft to be certain they are the correct length. I usually go to McMaster for specific fasteners not easily found at hardware stores: Here's their 6-32 and 4-40 black oxide flat head philips stainless machine screws. Of course they have pan head, socket cap, and other styles as well.

I ordered a supply of the various screws at Elecraft just to have them at
hand incase one got away from me.
