Re: Elecraft Digest, Vol 74, Issue 2

Let me piggyback with another somewhat related question.  I have an Ameco PT-3 preamp sitting in the shack.  It covers all ahm bands through six meters.  I plan on using it for SW listening (I do not have the general coverage module installed on the radio), and for 6 meter operation.  It has an internal transmit/receive circuit.  Will this set up work for both applications?  I know when I tune around the SW bands I do hear signals, so I am hopeful that the preamp will help.  Any guidance?

I am adding a preamp to my K3  (SN 763) to help out with some weaker signals.  As i have a 5 el yagi at 40 ft, best i can do, it's fed with 1/2 inch hardline and is about 75 ft long.  I had a Radio shack unit i found that had 10 db gain from 50 mc upwards.  I did hear an increase in noise anyway FWIW but it's not what i wanted and besides it's 110Vac operated.  Mainly for fringe TV reception i suspect.

Anyway i'm trying to determine just how to install this thing.  I have the dual fans on the back so mounting it there is not an option.  Another route is definitely needed so this isn't a big problem.  What i am having trouble figuring out is the cabling.  I saw one picture of how a ham had done his but there was no mention of where or which port on the radio would be used.  I suspect it has to be the AUX port correct?  I only have one 6 meter antenna.  How can i use the preamp without some sort of external ant switch?

The older one gets the easier we seem to get confused.  Trying to make sense of the pictures in the manual is a ride to mental instability for me.  Just doesn't seem to be all the parts there to make sense.

Suggestion?  Otherwise, this radio is super.  Getting to know how to make it work now and it's sure a lot of fun to play with.
