Hi Web,
I also use all of the XVs in my shack and they do not have a heat
problem. The only restriction we place on them is for continuous duty FM
use, where we recommend that they run at 5W. I believe this is where
some customers felt they were hot when they didn't follow this
recommendation and tried to run FM at 20W for long transmissions. For
SSB and CW use I've used them in contests with zero heat issues. Also,
for your requirement where they are run at 10W or less they will have
even more margin. 1W for the 432 will be cool regardless of what your
duty cycle is. :-) I don't see a problem.
The XVs are linear transverters and can have their input driving power
range set by their internal jumpers and power range potentiometer. You
can easily set them up so that they only put out 1W or 10W max for a
given amount of drive. (This assumes you are driving them with low level
inputs in the -20 dBm to +10 dBm ranges and can control your max drive
power.)
Please feel free to email me if you have any further questions. Another
good person to talk to is Mike, K7MDL,

our XVs in his mobile VHF/UHF contesting rover set up. He has a web page
describing this set up at:
