They have become tarnished with heat, and won't pass the current. All early K3s can expect to have this problem sooner or later, IMHO. That was a big 'oops' - newer K3s have gold pins. K3 Support can send you pictures of a 'bypass surgery' mod that will be a good workaround. I did it, and have had no further problems. I believe you can also purchase a can of deoxit and spray it liberally
on the pins and connector side and carefully plug and unplug the board a few times. Hi Ralph,
Thanks for *that* information. I own K3 #24, built in 2007 and working fine since then, and have never had the problem described. However, Elecraft may have used different connectors in very early kits. I'll check for the steel pins, but suspect they're gold-plate. You're sure they're steel and not BeCu? Again - thanks for the info! 73, matt W6NIA On Sun, 11 Dec 2011 17:49:09 -0800, you wrote: >>...the power was lower than usual and there was a 12 ERR message on screen... >>I turned it off and on again... >>the ERR message came up again and 8 watts indicated. Well.... not 'liberally'. Deoxit suggests that you use a very small amount. I guess that

When troubleshooting my KPA board issues Rene at Elecraft used the term
liberally, they are in California....draw your own conclusions HI! He said to make sure both the pins and the terminal strip was well coated. I have a K3 SN in the 600's and I have never seen this error either. It was my other K3 in the 2300's where one of the drivers failed. Due to an ordering misunderstanding I have 2 different Deoxit versions, standard cleaner and Deoxit Gold. According to the instructions the cleaner cleans(!) and the Gold is applied post cleaning to prevent any subsequent oxidation/tarnishing. Wonder which everyone's using..?
Not had any problems with the PA module on K3 #145 but plenty with the front panel connections which Deoxit fixes..... 73, Stewart, GW0ETF

Stewart,
With several known issues with corrosion or bad contact being made with the numerous connections in the K3, I am wondering what could be done differently at manufacture that might alleviate some of these issues at least? I wonder if there different types of connectors out there that are perhaps less prone to what we are seeing? Just sitting here pondering listening to the static on 40M which is enough to get the mind wandering...:-) 73 Gary VK4FD - Motorhome Mobile Elecraft Equipment K3 #679, KPA-500 #018 Living the dream!!! ----- Original Message ----- From: GW0ETF To: [hidden email] Sent: Monday, December 12, 2011 6:42 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 12v ERR - Deoxit Due to an ordering misunderstanding I have 2 different Deoxit versions, standard cleaner and Deoxit Gold. I have never had such problems with my K2 which uses a front
panel/control unit coupled to the main board with connectors. It does seem a design modification is desirable for the K3. 73 de David G4DMP In a recent message, Gary VK4FD <[hidden email]> writes >With several known issues with corrosion or bad contact being made with >the numerous connections in the K3, I am wondering what could be done >differently at manufacture that might alleviate some of these issues at >least? > >I wonder if there different types of connectors out there that are >perhaps less prone to what we are seeing? -- + - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + | David M Pratt, Kippax, Leeds. | | Website: http://www.g4dmp.co.uk | + - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Radio Shack sells a combo package with the regular Deoxit and their Gold
Deoxit. The normal deoxit is for non gold connectors and the gold is for gold contacts. To further the discussion I use Corrosion X on everything electrical. I have two charter boats and it works. No debate intended and I am not suggesting Corrosion X is better than Deoxit, just putting the information out there.

If you remove your KPA3, it should be obvious if you have gold pins or
not, in the connectors that mate with the riser board. I believe that the standard factory repair for this problem replaces only the 6 pins that carry the 12V supply to the PA. I'm not sure how new K3s are equipped (all gold pins, or only those 6). ~iain / N6ML On Mon, Dec 12, 2011 at 11:01 AM, N2TK, Tony <[hidden email]> wrote: > Does anyone know when the connectors were changed? Guys,
Thanks for all the replies to my original question below. Had a closer look at what I have and the 'cleaner' is the D100L (Caig). I got them both from a HiFi supplier in the UK in 2ml squeeze tubes...about £5 a throw but it goes a long way! May have mentioned this before but I use those small interdental brushes to apply the stuff; if you get some of the really small ones you can get inside the header sockets as well. This way just a few microlitres can coat everything... 73, Stewart, GW0ETF

We use Deoxit here at work at Xerox where I am in the service area. When using deoxit over the years it has been found to be excellent but after some years after its application issues have arisen mostly due to over application. Some time ago, to solve this we switched from the 100% solution to the 5% solution "d5l" and found that it worked as well with less issues over time because of the much lower residue and better cleaning/flushing. This is really great stuff. its also great on Vintage gear.
