Jim's right, the interface is not really required, but its nice that the MK2
comes with a built in sound card independent of the computer's own sound card, a way for my K3 to speak Icom CI-V! My club has all Icom with microHAM StationMaster antenna and bandpass filter control; with the MK2, I just plug the CI-V control for the antenna switching into the MK2, and my K3 impersonates an Icom! The sound card in the MK2 sounds really clean, plus, it has a WinKey built in (but the redio has a keyer too), it can do FSK (but so can the radio) and PSK 31 (but so does the radio) and all sorts of other handy malarkey. It just makes life easy for me... When I go to a multi, I bring the rig, the MK2, a USB cable and a thumbdrive with Router and my config files for the MK2. In 15 minutes or less, Im ready to go with N1MM, WinTest or Writelog, with no need to diddle with setting levels or anything else computer wise. Regarding the canned alphabet/numbers sounding terrible, I like to edit audio, I made mine sound pretty good (Ive worked you several times with it, Jim). I think it sounds as good as Walgreen Pharmacy's VRU. Yes it sounds canned, but when your voice gives out its better than nothing. If anyone has worked Jamie DuPree NS3T in a contest, his DVK sounds incredibly good, however, he has spent a lot of time on it. As he makes his living with his voice, and has trouble keeping his voice fully operational for work and play; its a good investment for him. Its really nice to have lots of DVK slots, because I do 40 and 10 meters a lot in multis. You get tired of repeating CQ's "listening this frequency and seventy ninety five" and having some in English and Spanish for 10 meters has been found useful at times. Works for me, may not work for you, that's the beauty of choice in the Good Ol' US of A! -lu-w4lt- ================== Message: 10 Date: Sun, 04 Sep 2011 11:08:14 -0700 From: Jim Brown <[hidden email]> Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3: Contesters using N1MM voice keyer versus K3DVK To: [hidden email] Message-ID: <[hidden email]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed On 9/4/2011 10:39 AM, Luis V. An MK2 box or equivalent is NOT required for high quality playback free of hum and buzz. My tutorial on Ham Interfacing shows how simple bonding and properly wired cables do everything needed. 73, Jim Brown K9YC ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
