Interesting you note the odd drop outs using 5kz tuning.
Using the coarse tune sounds like a tick/clunk when crossing
various frequencies, it is mostly noticed when there is fairly
stong local noise, like televison line output or plasma.
Not exactly a drop out but when fast tune spinning the vfo
you can hear what appear to be quiet spots.

I've noticed lately that if I set the coarse tuning for SSB to 5khz that I get dropouts as I tune and can land on a frequency where the receiver goes dead. Moving the VFO brings the receiver alive. Appears to be ok if the coarse tuning is set to 1khz. Anyone have this oddity?
