I had this problem with #1823 just after I returned from an expedition
in 2010. (lucky, eh?)
It is indeed a result of the steel pins carrying the 12v to the PA
becoming tarnished.
Not trusting myself to replace the pins, I opted for the "bypass
operation" - wire jumpers around the pins (Elecraft can send you picturs
and instructions). Piece of cake, and works FB.
Elecraft replaced the pins on a second K3 with gold ones when it was in
for service.
Frustrating when you don't know why it happens, but an easy fix in
either case.
