Fred,
Leave the K3 in USB, and try pressing the left side of the mode switch
and holding it down a bit longer (that's the *ALT*ernate Mode selection).
If that doesn't work, the K3 is dysfunctional; if you failed to try
that, the technical difficulty is that it was not in your mind. :-)
