Thanks to Don and others for responding so quickly.
As I thought, there was a short in the cable. I re-cut and re-
soldered one end of the RS232 connectors and now all is well.
Those little buggers are a pain (for me, anyhow). The instructions
are to strip 5mm of each wire...I found 3mm MAX or they tend to
short. I also found that it's easier than I thought to nick the
insulation of the individual wires when removing the sleeve (they're
like BUTTER hi).
All is well and my QSOs are better ...now to get that stutter out of
my keyer! (practice, practice)
The clatter of the relays really surprised me...i guess I should have
expected it but I thought the KAT went haywire with the first TUNE.
My first homebrew G5RV seems to work well. The folded dipole that I
bought is now folded up and put away.
I asked this on a newsgroup but I'd like to get a response here as well:
The antenna is a bit too long such that a dip in SWR is just under or
at the base of the band on 80, 40 and 20.
(Eg., on 40 M the dip is at 6750 KHz)
So, do I bring down the antenna and shorten it, or leave it alone and
let the ATU do it''s thing?
Thanks as usual!
John
