Re: KX1 on AAAs or Lithium Polymer?

Funny, I was just looking at external battery pack possibilities for
my KX1 last night.

I had clipped out a QST article by AD5X (March 2005) about taking
two 7.2v R/C type NiMH packs and combining them to power his SG-2020.
The voltage is a bit high for the KX1 (16V fully charged), and I didn't
like the idea of 'wasting' charge with dropping diodes. But it's an option.
(It's also heavier than the KX1 - about 2 lbs when done.)

I'm also contemplating an 8-cell NiMH (9.6V) pack. This would be a
good in-the-pocket unit for cold weather ops. The voltage is perhaps
a bit lower than desired.

LiPoly seems like the 'right' approach for a lightweight radio, even
if it is more expensive. 11.1v in a triple cell pack isn't bad.

I'd be quite interested in an Elecraft-approved solution! I could live
with an external charge controller that just got plugged into the
external DC jack...

What about having the diodes switchable?  Have them in the circuit when
the pack is fully charged, and then short them when the voltage drops
below 12V.  Or use a low-drain regulator to get the same result
automatically.
