Wayne posted the following back on May 25th:

"We're leaving "hooks" in place for either a 2 m or 4 m transverter (or  
possibly both) in the KX3. It would be in the ~5W range, and would  
substitute for the optional ATU. If you needed both the transverter  
and an ATU, you'd need to use an external ATU such as the Elecraft T1,

The KX3 will be able to contain the internal battery pack, roofing filter
module and ATU at the same time. If/when an internal transverter module is
developed, it would occupy the space that the internal ATU uses. So the only
either/or combo would be regarding those two units.

I think it is a sensible arrangement.  KX3 + a V/U HT will become a handy station from HF to V/U ready to deploy.
