Guys
I am new to this reflector; but am already considering quitting. Having just gotten a K3, I was hoping to see it as a source of useful info // advice, that I will undoubtedly need in the weeks ahead. Of course the reflector is for more than just the K3; and I can see the Euphoria surrounding the Latest offerings from Elecraft. However, there seems too much traffic that is well off topic ( and I am sorry, 6m conditions, Pacemakers etc are point in case!) Who regulates the reflector; is there any attempt to reinforce some discipline or am I just to accept that I just can't cope with wading through another 100 plus emails a day ?? 73 Dave, G3NKC ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Hi Dave,
The rules regarding posting aren't restricted entirely to Elecraft products. Frankly, there are too many smart people on the reflector to waste their talent on only one subject. That said, the Elecraft reflector is my e-mail software's most heavily filtered folder. I think I currently have 8 filters set up to minimize noise on topics I'm not interested in. In fact, as much as I'm excited to learn about the KX3, a KX3 filter will be going up very shortly so I don't have to wade through the endless speculation and wish list submissions about the thing! Long story short: it's worth sticking around, but you might want to look into ways of managing the traffic. 73, Ken Alexander, VE3HLS --- On Thu, 5/26/11, Dave Sharred <[hidden email]> wrote: From: Dave Sharred <[hidden email]> Subject: Re: [Elecraft] OT - Why so much Off topic?? Turn off the "send email" option and just read your topics-of-interest here:

As far as I'm concerned, what you see is what you get. If Yahoo's span filter doesn't do it, I have another one located between my ears. I don't see what all the fuss is.

I agree with Ken Alexander VE3HLS. My mail program has a decent filtering system. Since this reflector has such diverse topics .... I have taken the trouble of making filters for those of special interest to me (conversely .... helping me avoid those that are not) which only takes a minute of my time. I use the now free program Eudora with the result I don't have to deal with topics that don't interest me. Beside, there is so much traffic on the reflector that it can be tedious going through everything. As Ken mentioned, I now have a filter for topics containing KX3 .... as it interests me. So give it a try. I created the various web archives for the Elecraft list (except for the qth.net/qsl.net ones).
In my opinion, the Nabble site is the best one for for reading, for searching, and for writing as well. All traffic is synchronized with the mailing list, so you get the best of both worlds. It's here: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ On Nabble, the messages are already filtered and sorted so you can read just KX3 or just QRO posts. I created the following categories, and anyone who puts one of these at the start of the subject gets their messages put into the correct category directly: [K3] [K2] [K1] [KX3] [KX1] [MM] [XV] [HAM] [QRO] [OT] If a message is marked OT (or even if it's not) and it's ham related, it goes into [HAM]. Only truly off-topic stuff goes into [OT]. If you need help getting started, send me email and I'll help. Leigh/WA5ZNU |

I used to set kill filters for the topics I wasn't interested in, but found that at some times I would delete something that interested me, so using my Email program 'Agent' I now use the watch filter to look for phrases in the subject that contain topics I'm not interested in and move them to a folder named "Elecraft Ignore". This allows me to view the ignored topics to see if one or more interest me, about once a week. 73, Tom Amateur Radio Operator N5GE On Thu, 26 May 2011 17:21:20 -0400, Jim Dunstan <[hidden email]> wrote: > >I agree with Ken Alexander VE3HLS. For your information, G3NKC who started this thread, has now
unsubscribed from the reflector. If only people would use these properly in their subject lines the filtering would do the job. Unfortunately they don't. We have for instance KX3, KX-3, KX 3 - and I see today we even have CK722 and CK-722. It becomes harder and harder to set up a regular expression to cope with all the variants, and very few see to put brackets [] round it. I appreciate this has been discussed countless times before and Eric is not going to split the list, but quite honestly the amount of traffic on this list is totally out of all proportion for those of us who are busy enough in other email areas. Nabble has problems, often messages are delayed for days and its poor threading means relevant posts are missed, but I think I shall also unsubscribe and visit there just occasionally. 73 Dave G3YMC On 26 May 2011 at 14:35, Leigh L. Hopefully it is of inspiration for anyone who wants to do a similar thing on their own mail client. Sieve rules should be fairly similar (sieve supports regular expressions as well). Note that order is relevant, and usually first match wins. Most (all?) mail clients have some filtering options. Learning to use them sure add to our bag of knowledge. I use the Gmail client for email. Even with a pile of 70 or 80
messages, I can use the J and X hot keys to go down the list and mark entire threads for deletion in less than 60 seconds. It's limited by how fast I can read the titles. I click on the delete button and all that remains is stuff I am interested in reading. The Gmail client also gathers the messages by thread in the main display, and removes prior matter from the message BEFORE it is sent to my screen. Older material can be clicked on and retrieved. In short, it answers many of the reflector complaint issues. Personally I oppose splitting the list, because it would make cleaning up for reading a lot slower. When I use nabble, I turn OFF the option that splits the messages by category. Otherwise the most recent messages are scattered all over the place. 73, Guy.
