This is a long shot, but I had this sort of problem for quite a while and tried all sorts of things to fix my "watery" CW.

If your radio is equipped with the KDSP2, check the settings.  I must have been playing with the K2's DSP settings just prior to the arrival of my K3, so by the time I got round to using my K2 again, I'd forgotten all about the tinkering.

I awarded myself the dummy of the week prize HI!

Dave,

On the bottom of the RF Board, check the small RF Choke RFC15 for
continuity - check with the ohmmeter, voltage checks at both ends will
be 5 volts even if it is open.  If it is open, you can use a temporary
jumper across it, but get the proper choke and install it when available.
