Whoops!  I meant KBT1 internal battery, not KNB1 noise blanker.  Although
the KNB1 doesn't do much for the noise I've encountered, there's no point to
pulling it out of the K1.

The KBT1 would be much more useful if it were easily installed/removed
through the use of a polarized two-pin connector mounted *on* the RF board,
instead of the soldered wire connections in the current design or the
floating connectors that some have installed.  I definitely don't want the
KBT1 residing permanently in my K1, but it would be handy to have every once
in a while.

For my purposes, the most useful accessoies to a four-band K1 are in order:
KAT1 antenna tuner (a MUST HAVE item)
KFL1-2 two-band board for the remaining two official K1 HF bands
KNB1 noise blanker (distant third)
KTS1 stand (distant fourth)
KBT1 internal battery (distant fifth, because it lacks quick connect
capability).

If I had only a two-band K1, the first priority would be to get a four-band
KFL1-4.

I mostly agree. I bought the 4-band up front...that was definitely the top
accessory. The KAT1 follows a close second, although if I had bought a
2-bander, I would have bought the KATU1 before additional bands.

I didn't buy the KNB1. I have never had an NB that worked very well and the
K1 is primarily my field radio where I don't experience a lot of noise the a
NB would reduce.

KTS1 I already said I really really like. If a bale had come with the K1,
like the K2, I might not have spent $35 for the KTS1, but I would have
missed out. Sitting in the shack or on a campground table, a bale is all you
need to lift the front panel. But day or backpacking with my back against a
rock and the K1 in the sand, I appreciate the long legs and three-footed
stance of the KTS1.

Full agreement on the KBT1. I added a small high-current polarized plug set
from my R/C truck experiment days to make it easily removable. And the
batteries have to be removed when not in use, so it doesn't really do
anything I couldn't do with a separate, more versatile and cheaper battery
pack that plugs into the back. I like the easy-off top cover with thumb
screws that comes with it, though. It would be very handy for those with a
KFL-2 and KFL-4.

The K1 is a great little rig. Now if it only had a backlight LCD...I heard
one might be in the "maybe" stage of development.

I second this "motion"!  Only thing I had for my K1 I DIDN'T LIKE was the internal battery
option.  Batteries are a pain to change.  No quick disconnect to reinstall old
cover, and the smaller loudspeaker "sucks" (at least to my poor ears!)
The money better spent on the tilt stand, which is REAL handy in the field in the grass!
I didn't opt for the noise blanker.  Since most of my operation away from my rural
location (no ignition noise here!) is in the field somewhere (no ignition noise there either)
I figured: what's the point?
Best "portable battery yet is the gel cell "Vector" pack for $15 from Sportsman's Guide.

RE: The "Backlight"!!

Check the website technical topics for the K1.  There is a simple mod. that uses two
very bright white LEDs to illuminate the display.  It works great and only adds 20 ma. to the drain.
Well worth it at night.
