Trevor,
A covered bridge is a wooden structure built across a river or creek with a roof and enclosed and/or partially enclosed sides used to give protection from the elements, usually snow or ice. These were fairly common here in Waterloo County during the 18 hundreds, built by the Amish and Mennonites who settled in this area and in Pennsylvania and the Eastern States in the USA. There are still a few left and in daily use in this Ontario County. We live in "Mennonite" country here in Waterloo Region where the farmers of that sect still farm in the old ways using horses to haul their equipment and buggies on the roads. They still stooke the grain by hand. Their houses do not connect to the hydro (electricity) grid, although they often generate their own electricity using gasoline or diesel generators. 73, Bob VE3XM K2/100 S/N 04031 K2 S/N 02676 _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Years ago, when I was fueled by 807s, a few of us erected a long wire antenna that went the length of the bridge and then went off to a tree limb above my parked car. I had a set of Morrow Twins that had NEVER made a contact from my car...so we tried 75 meters.....Managed to: Drink too many more 807s, Have a few QSOs, Run out of gas, Explain to the policeman that found us that stringing antennae was perfectly normal. Might try it again, sans the 807s and the Morrow twins. 73,Thom-k3hrn www.zerobeat.net Home of QRP Web Ring, Drakelist home page, Free Classified Ads for amateur radio, QRP IRC channel Elecraft Owners Database www.tlchost.net/hosting/ *** Web Hosting as low as 3.49/month _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
