Ready to start, but one question...

Rockinghorse Winner
Hi all. I have a few extra dolars and a cold apartment, and am ready to start on my K2.  However, my funds do not extend to all the extras like the KPA-100, DSP, KAT, etc... so I was interested in knowing how extensive and difficult is the retrofitting of these modules vis a vis desoldering. Thanks.

Very easy. The K2 was designed specifically to be modular with accessories
added as interest and funds dictate.

Lee,

Adding the options later is no great task and usually involves de-soldering
only one or 2 option jumpers.  Additionally, the KSB2 requires that you
remove one capacitor, and the KNB2 requires that you remove 3 resistors, and
for the K60XV one capacitor must be changed - all other parts are added to
locations that have not been previously used.

If you wish to avoid any future desoldering changes and case disassembly
(except for the K60XV capacitor value change), you could install all the
option headers and build the 'Un-PCBs' that are available - see
http://home.cfl.rr.com/garyhvizdak/KI4GGX/unpcbs/ for further information.
Gary and Ken have provided a list of Elecraft parts (headers, standoffs,
etc.) required to do that - see
http://home.cfl.rr.com/garyhvizdak/KI4GGX/unpcbs/Resources/Plug~&~Play~K2~Up
grade~Parts~List.htm for the full information.

Hi Lee
I built one of the early field test K2s, so we had to add the options as
they
came along.  Adding them is pretty trivial.  In some cases, a few components
to
be added to the radio, or perhaps some component changed to a different
value.
Absolutely nothing difficult at all.

I suggest you decide how you want to operate your rig when it's finished,
then
add the options in order of your priorities.  I think the slickest option is
the KAT2 internal antenna tuner, followed by the KDSP2 DSP audio filter and
noise reducer.  If you like to work 160m you have to add that option also,
but
it's just a little board that mounts in the rear of the main RF board.

Anyway, just enjoy the fun of building your K2.  Don't rush, because when
it's
done, you'll be looking around for something else to build :-)
