Rewiring an Icom SM-20 for K3

Phil Hystad-3
The recent question on desk mics for the K3 reminded me of a project I need to do.  I want to rewire my SM-20 for use with my K3.  I understand that the K3 has all the features necessary to use the electret style SM-20 mic and all I need to do is rewire the 8-pin mic connector for the K3.

So, my plan is to create a cable, about 2 feet in length with the male/female ends so that I can plug the SM-20 into this cable and then plug the cable into the front panel connector of the K3.  I will switch the wiring of pins to cross wire from the Icom mic pin connections to the K3 pin connections.  Then, I will set the bias and other things necessary on the K3 to make it work.

First -- is there anything wrong with this plan -- I mean, is my only need to make sure that the wiring connections to the pins is correct?

Second -- is there an official name for these mic connectors or is it just 8-pin mic connector that I can order anywhere.

Third -- is there any type of cable that I should use or not use.  Does it need to be shielded?

Thanks for any help you might be.

  Phil,

I do not recall seeing a response to your question, but yes, it should
work, and the plug is referred to as an 8 pin Foster plug.
The cable does not have to be shielded, but it should have the AF and AF
return wires as a twisted pair or be shielded in themselves.  You can
purchase Heil microphone wire that will work nicely.  Universal Radio
has in-line jacks as well as plugs and also carries Heil Microphone cable.

Your SM-20 up/down buttons will not work with the K3, do not connect
that pin - similar with the SQL pin on that microphone.
