Solder wick should be avoided?...Wish I knew that 40 years ago...
Everything has it's purpose...Solder wick works very well in those instances where excess solder on the inaccessible "other side" of the board will not respond to solder suckers like the Hakko 808...The sudden blast of air, sucked through the joint, chills and solidifies the solder before it can all be removed...This is particularly a problem on any joint that is on the ground foil on the far side of the board...I've built, up-graded, and repaired a lot of Elecrafts and would not want to be without the Hakko 808 and solder wick...
