When using Remote Rig for running a remote K3, what are people using for rotor control?

At the moment, I am using logmein.com, a free program for remotely controlling a pc I left running at the remote location (with a backup battery.) I log on and use Green Heron software to control a Green Heron rotor box. It is slow and clumsy.
Option 1, which inexplicably failed, was an ethernet-to-serial converter. There are many varieties, they are very ideosyncratic. When it worked, it was great. You set up a virtual serial port at your control location, and that becomes the rotor port used in your software. The virtual serial port software is normally provided by the converter manufacturer, and the converters don't seem to like other virtual port software. USConverters.com is one place to start. As I say, mine worked great until it didn't, and I don't know why it failed, but I had a backup. I got a neighbor to go in and change the cable from the rotor box to the one to my PC. N3JT has had success with a converter, and he has written an article for the (I think) January CQ on the subject. Let me know what you learn in the process. 73 de Brian, W3BW/remote Key West to Maryland -- 70 is the new 40. Brian F. David,
Assuming you already have serial control of your rotor, then I can suggest two ways to control remotely without using a PC at the radio side: 1) If you are not using the RRC's COM1, you can use that to control the rotor as well. This passes the serial port over the internet 2) If you are already using COM1 for something else (e.g. for CAT support under the K3 Twin mode), then you can buy a separate serial port server device, such as from Lantronix or Moxa. These need to be setup in a similar manner to the RRC, i.e. port forwards in the router, etc. Then you install a serial port redirector on your local PC that accesses these serial ports over the internet through your normal control software. 73, Mitch DJ0QN On 24.12.2013 22:20, David Christ wrote: > When using Remote Rig for running a remote K3, what are people using for rotor control? > > David K0LUM > ______________________________________________________________ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:[hidden email] > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > > > -- > Mitch Wolfson > DJØQN / K7DX > Neubiberger Str. 21, 85640 Putzbrunn > Skype: mitchwo - Home:+49 89 32152700 - Mobile:+49 172 8374436 > Echolink: 3001 - IRLP: 5378 Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

I use one of these and it has worked great.

I'm using PstRotator from Codrut YO3DMU. I run the server side on a Dell
Optiplex computer ($200 used - very quiet and reliable) at the remote site, along with server apps for KPA and KAT. I run the client side at the control site. Codrut's package has extensive support for many different rotors and logging software. It even supports remote control of elevation rotors, SteppIR controllers and other stuff. In my case, I control an Orion RC2800P-A rotor controller at the remote site from Writelog on my control site computer. Type in a call, push an F-key and the rotor turns to the correct azimuth. Very slick. Writelog connects to the control side RemoteRig RRC COM1-USB port for rig control as well. /Rick On Tue, Dec 24, 2013 at 1:20 PM, David Christ <[hidden email]> wrote: > When using Remote Rig for running a remote K3, what are people using for > rotor control? > > David K0LUM > ______________________________________________________________ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:[hidden email] > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > -- Rick Tavan N6XI Truckee, CA ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Hi David: Another approach is to use the 1216H Web Switch and related 1216L Rotator Control from Microbit. see http://www.remoterig.com/wp/?page_id=166 for an overview of the two units; 73, Doug VE3MV On 2013-Dec-24, at 4:20 PM, David Christ <[hidden email]> wrote: > When using Remote Rig for running a remote K3, what are people using for rotor control? > > David K0LUM > ______________________________________________________________ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:[hidden email] > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

David,
Iam using 5 remotely controlled rotators (1x Prosistel, 2xCreate, 2x Yaesu) with my Remoterig RRC1258 and K3/0 + K3. I tested few solutions. The best (better than the Remoterig solution) for me is the PstRotator SW from YO3DMU http://www.qsl.net/yo3dmu/index_Page346.htm Rotartors are equiped with the ERC hardware - PCB unit from http://www.schmidt-alba.de <http://www.schmidt-alba.de/English/english.html> All works fine for over 1Yr. 73, MX + HNY Milan, OK7GU www.ok7gu.com > > > ------------------------------ > > Message: 17 > Date: Tue, 24 Dec 2013 15:20:38 -0600 > From: David Christ <[hidden email]> > To: [hidden email] > Subject: [Elecraft] Rotor control > Message-ID: <[hidden email]> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii > > When using Remote Rig for running a remote K3, what are people using for rotor control? > > David K0LUM > > ------------------------------ > > ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

I use N1MM ROTOR to control both of my rotors at my remote station--Orion 2800px and Ham4 with the EZ card. I have 2 K3's and the RRC package. All the peripherals get switched with 2 of Green Heron GHEverywhere boxes and the 16 contacts. Keep an old Dell6?? Box going and view the screen at the control sight with Remote Administrator program. The Idiom Press EZ card occasionally hangs up so I use one contact to repower the rotors also one to power up an auto tuner. The rest switch 6 pack, 2 4 sq, and 4 Beverages. My trusty old Alpha 87 does it's thing with Alpha remote.
All works great. John,N0IJ. Control in MN, station in WI Sent from my iPhone > On Dec 24, 2013, at 5:50 PM, Rick Tavan N6XI <[hidden email]> wrote: > > I'm using PstRotator from Codrut YO3DMU.
