SCS Pactor 3 modem with K3

Johnny Siu
Hello Group,

I asked this question before in the mail reflector but did not get an answer.

I would like to connect my K3 with the SCS modem PTC-IIusb to operate Airmail.
Could any of you advise me the correct wiring diagram between K3 and the modem?
SCS do not make a specifc cable for K3.

Thanks for your help in advance.

 cheers,

Johnny VR2XMC

AFAIK the PTC-II controllers do not "speak" K3 CAT commands, therefore the "TRX Control" port cannot be used to control a K3.
Consequence: No frequency scanning (controlled by the PTC-II).

The audio part between the PTC-II's "TRX Audio" port and the K3 is straightforward:
PTC Audio output (pin1) to K3 Line in
PTC Audio input (pin4) to K3 Line out
PTC PTT output (pin3) to K3 PTT in
PTC GND (pin2) to K3 GND ;-)

Thanks Markus.

It is a pitty that K3 cannot work properly with the best pactor 3 modem.  HF
email is now one of the cheapest and reliable way in marine and ARES.
 cheers,

Re: Re: SCS Pactor 3 modem with K3

Airmail DOES speak K3 CAT commands

I am not sure about the PTC modems ability to support the K3 directly
since my PTC2e does not support rig control directly.
if this is important to you then prehaps it would be worthwhile asking
SCS to add K3 support, this should be easy for them to do as it's just a
small extension of the kenwood protocol which they already support

In my station rig control is by means of a second com port connected
directly to the k3.
Surely in almost any set-up except prehaps a dedicated pactor only
station the rig will be connected to the PC via a second com port (or
USB-RS232 adapter) for logging, firmware updates etc?

I am unsure where the difficulty lies since full K3 control is available
via airmail and has been for quite a while

I have very successfully used the k3 for pactor with scanning as a
private PMBO for EI6GH/MM & EI9FYB/MM

the K3 works very nicely for pactor

Re: Re: SCS Pactor 3 modem with K3

Jim Campbell
I have used the K2 with the PTC-IIusb with no problem. As I remember
it, Airmail talks to the PTC on one com Port and to the K2 on another. I
haven't had this particular configuration set up for several years but
if necessary I could probably re-create it.

I did modify the K2 to give the PTC low level access to the audio path
for both transmit and receive.

If it can speak the standard Kenwood freq control commands, it should work with the K3.

Both the K3 ans K2 support the basic Kenwood commands as a subset.

not true. There is no problem to control the K3 using the SCS Ptc-2.
Use the Kenwood protocol. "trx ty k 38400 A" for example will set your Ptc-
2 to 38.400 baud on VFO A and you can scan the frequency list without a
computer running.
The old Ptc-2 uses TTL levels, so you might need a level converter
(MAX232) and with the new Ptc-2pro or USB set the TRX TY to V24.
I have built a SCS Trx-ptc modem inside my K3 and K2.

In addition to this, Airmail after version 3.4 directly supports Elecraft
K2 and K3 transceivers. (also setting the correct mode) You can use either
a direct comport or the Ptc-2 trx control port. I think it was me who
persuaded Jim KE6RK into adding the Elecraft transceivers to the list of
supported radios in Oct. 2008 ;-)

I think I made a small pdf with the necessary settings in the K3 to
operate Pactor. I can say it works excellent if you do it right.

SCS Pactor 3 modem with K3

Johnny Siu
Hello Dr.  Werner.

Thanks for your reply.  I will try to work on the set up of K3 + Modem +
Airmail in my PC.  My purpose is to run Airmail in my notebook via K3 + SCS
modem.

The link between my notebook PC to the SCS modem is via blue tooth (or USB).

Therefore, I am now working on the connection cables between K3 and the SCS
modem.  Unlike the Icom / Yaesu / Kenwood, SCS do not make specific cables for
K3.  I am going to build the connection cables myself.

BTW, I would take this chance to THANK all the replies either on the list or off
the list to my questions on this topic.

SCS modem is expensive but by far the best one - Pactor 3.  I trust it has been
widely used by marine and ERU of Red Cross.  I also send my question to SCS
modem and reply is awaited.  The hams in this reflector respond to my questions
very quick.

 cheers,

Johnny VR2XMC
