I have had my K3 on the air for about a month now. I operate 95% CW and feel comfortable with how to operate this rig on the air in that regard. I have not had much time to spend getting acclimated with the rig on SSB until this weekend.
I spent a great deal of time my first week adjusting my EQ for SSB by listening to my self through the headphones and like where I dialed it in. However, when I get on the air, stations are telling my my bandwidth needs to be opened up. The reports I am getting are that I am at 400-600hz. A couple of them have recorded and played it back for me and they are right. I have been through the menu and google, and cannot find anything that tells me how to adjust the TX SSB bandwidth. From what I can tell the rig should by default be opened up all the way to what the stock filter is which for me is the 2.7. Any ideas? AC8JD |
Sounds like you have somehow mis-configgured your filter(s).
Try using the K3 Utility and verify your filter settings. Make sure you have selected the 2.7 KHz filter for SSB TX. Can we assume you have a 400 hz filter installed for CW? ...bill nr4c On Mon, 23 Jul 2012 05:33:20 -0700 (PDT), ac8jd wrote: > I have had my K3 on the air for about a month now. Sounds like you need to check the TX Equalizer settings. Tap Menu and scroll to TX EQ. There are 8 EQ bands. Many people seem to have good luck with bands 1&2 set to -16, bands 3-7 around 0, and band 8 at -6 or so. Select each band by tapping 1-8 and adjust using the VFO A knob.
More information is on page 35 of the K3 manual. 73, Chuck - AA3CS Sent from my iPhone On Jul 23, 2012, at 8:33, ac8jd <[hidden email]> wrote: > how to adjust the TX SSB bandwidth. > > Any ideas? > > AC8JD > ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I can think of two possibilities.
1) You do not have the offset correctly recorded for the 2.7 filter Be certain it is correct (matches the marking on the filter) either in the K3 menu or K3Utility. 2) You cut too much of the 400 Hz band in TX EQ. Normally there should be no reduction for band 4. The first 2 bands can be cut all the way, and the 3rd band cut some. It is difficult for anyone to evaluate their own voice in real time - at the lower frequencies your ears will hear your voice through bone conduction. I am guessing that may caused you to cut the lower EQ bands more than they should have been. It is better to record and playback later than to try to evaluate live. There is no adjustment of the TX bandwidth other than EQ and the filter offset setting. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/23/2012 8:33 AM, ac8jd wrote: > I have had my K3 on the air for about a month now. One bit of clarification: The offset of 2.7 kHz filters is usually negative.
The K3 and K3 Utility allow a range of offsets to be specified, including positive. Be sure that the filter offset sign (+ or -) is chosen correctly. 73 de Dick, K6KR -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Don Wilhelm Sent: Monday, July 23, 2012 6:18 AM To: ac8jd Cc: [hidden email] Subject: Re: [Elecraft] SSB Bandwiedth adjust I can think of two possibilities. 1) You do not have the offset correctly recorded for the 2.7 filter Be certain it is correct (matches the marking on the filter) either in the K3 menu or K3Utility. 2) You cut too much of the 400 Hz band in TX EQ.
