My K2 #922 ssb audio has a very pronounced sibilance problem (like a
lisp). The amount varies with different people speaking. SF4 (dsp) will cancel it out but that affects intelligibility, and I don't have that much to spare. SF1-3 don't have much effect on it and turning the dsp off doesn't help. I don't know how long this has been going on as I haven't used ssb for a few years--I have a 50 pound Kenwood that does ssb pretty well if I feel the need for it. I haven't done the matched crystal mod and I'm wondering if that will help. Any ideas will be appreciated. -- Bob Baxter AA7EQ Walnut Ridge, Ar. _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Transmit, receive, or both?
If on receive, that vintage of K2 needs the 2nd XFIL flattening mod as the first step. It takes out the "tilt" in that filter (used only on receive) that makes the audio sound bassy on one sideband and tinny on the other. Oops. Receive as far as I know. I've never transmitted with it. I
will try both mods. It's definitely bassy on lsb and tinny on usb. Thanks Ron. Bob Baxter AA7EQ Walnut Ridge, Ar. Sounds like an alignment is needed to place the IF in the middle of
the passband and not near an end. On Dec 10, 2005, at 12:56 PM, Bob Baxter wrote: > Oops. Receive as far as I know. I've never transmitted with it. I > will try both mods. Otherwise one ends up making a mess of the transmitted audio since the 2nd XFIL is used only on receive. The symptoms he described are exactly what we heard on early K2s when the BFO was set properly. IIRC, this is one of the mods that became part of the basic K2 as shipped starting about S/N 3000. It took that long to be incorporated only because it required a change to the main pc board in the K2. The issue came up and the mod was developed about the time I built S/N 1289 in the Spring of 2000, so only the oldest of the K2's now on the air had that problem. I've ordered the 2nd stage mod kit. I'm also going to do the matched
crystal mod on general principles. Thanks for the help, I may buy a microphone for it some day. I added the SSB for digital modes a few years ago but never checked SSB audio. Bob,
In addition, you will need to do a re-alignment of the filters/BFOs after you change the crystals, and while you are doing that, it is only a few steps to do a complete calibration. For the full information on how to accomplish that, take a look at my website http://w3fpr.qrpradio.com article on K2 dial calibration - Step 3 of that article goes into the CAL PLL procedures with references and links provided. The procedure is not difficult, but does require some care in executing it to assure good results and optimum performance from your K2. You will be pleased with the crystal change - not only on SSB, but for CW as well. 73, Don W3FPR > -----Original Message----- > > I've ordered the 2nd stage mod kit. Hi
I just like to share the great feeling of the first QSO with the K2. To night it came live in a 40M SSB QSO with PA3FAO some 450 Km, from my new QTH, not great DX but a QSO it was. Setup was a longwire sloping from the flag pole about 10 M long, feed by a T1 tuner (wire coming through the small opening of a almost closed door. To cold a round here to sit in shorts outside and play with radio). The K2 was with the SSB option installed, since I have not yet had the opportunity to learn the code (Had to wait few more days to go live until I got the SSB option done :-( ). Might still have some current consumption to verify, might get back to that here when investigated, but beside from that a great feeling. Most time spend on the assembly, but in due time the following link will be updated with the progress of #5111. www.the-jensen-dk.net Br. OZ1BZJ Michael PS. Do not worry I have week before last week got my self a paddle from HRO in San Diego. Visit the area few times a year for business. So I will give learning the code a go. With the price of the paddle a big go :-) _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
