Due to the congestion of the DX Phone contest, the weekly Elecraft SSB Net is cancelled for this week. Have a good week and we'll get together next week.

I always wonder why you don't move the net to 17M when there's a contest?

Hi Rick,
Probably because my station isn't as capable on 17M. Whereas on 20M I have a rotatable quad at 75', on 17M I only have a random wire. I fear that will make it hard for some to hear me. Hope to improve things this summer. 73, Phil, NS7P On Mar 3, 2013, at 8:28 AM, Rick Prather <[hidden email]> wrote: > I always wonder why you don't move the net to 17M when there's a contest? > > Rick > K6LE > > On 3/2/2013, at 9:39 , Phil Shepard <[hidden email]> wrote: > >> Due to the congestion of the DX Phone contest, the weekly Elecraft SSB Net is cancelled for this week. Actually, being net control with a beam probably would be challenging from the midwest. However, from where I sit in western Oregon, pointing my quad (whose pattern is a bit broad) due east gives me good coverage from southern Canada across the US to at least TX and NM. AZ and southern CA usually are strong even into the "side" of the quad. The most challenging area is that directly south (northern CA) and north (OR, WA and BC). These are too close and often need a relay. AK typically comes in well, and I routinely copy ZL into the back of the antenna. A relay from the south or in the midwest/east can usually pick up northern CA to BC. It generally works, with the proviso that the check-ins have a reasonably good signal toward OR. More relays are always helpful.

Phil,
I find I can load my triband yagi on 17m by using an antenna tuner in the shack (Drake MN-2000). Have you tried this? The antenna will not be optimum but the transmitter is OK with the load. 73, ED - KL7UW From: Phil Shepard <[hidden email]> To: "[hidden email]" <[hidden email]> Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB net cancelled Message-ID: <[hidden email]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Hi Rick, Probably because my station isn't as capable on 17M. Hi Ed,
I can load my tri-band quad on 17m or 12m with the K3's ATU, but the signal has to go up over 100' of RG-213 to get to the antenna (with all of that loss). I can also tune my 130' CFZ on any band through a heavy duty HB matchbox, but I can't control where the lobes are on the higher bands. Sometimes the quad is stronger on 17m and sometimes the CFZ is stronger. Neither is really optimum. Maybe I'll try it some contest weekend. 73, Phil, NS7P On Mar 4, 2013, at 12:10 AM, Edward R Cole <[hidden email]> wrote: > Phil, > > I find I can load my triband yagi on 17m by using an antenna tuner in the shack (Drake MN-2000). Due to the phone contest on this weekend, operating on 20M will be a challenge. It was today. I considered 17 M, but I spent time on that band with SOTA today, and it was not good. Enjoy the spring weather (I hope). It reached the 70's here today for the first time this year. See you next week. 73, Phil, NS7P ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
