Serious Question

Paul W. Van Dyke

Looking at the K3

I do Data (PSK31, RTTY) and SSB on DXpeditions

I know the DVR and USB as it will used with HRD

What options would you suggest to put in the rig to start with knowing other options can be added later.

And what filters are suggested for those modes.

Looking at 2010 DXpeditions

Re: Serious Question

I would look at the 2.8k although people say the 2.7k is fine and the 1.8 for ssb.  I would also go for either the 400 or 500hz for cw/rtty

The 2nd receiver is very handy I would run with at 2.8 and a 500 or 400 in the sub receiver but you can fill it up.

Xvter option for receive antennas, Antenna tuner.

I also outfitted an expedition K3 (#2183).  Mine was $2350 before shipping with the following options:

K3/100 (stock 2.7k included)
KXV3 (not necessary unless you use separate RX ANT)
KAT3
KFL3A-500 (for CW/Digital if you expect QRM S9+25 or higher)

You would add a KDVR3 for $110 making the total $2460 plus shipping.  Unless your antenna will present  signals over S9+25 to your K3 input, the 500 Hz filter may not be necessary.  Build the rig yourself so you'll be comfortable making field repairs (it's fun too!)

Hi Paul,

The KXV3 is a must for Rx antennas. For a DXpedition, I'd probably consider the KAT3, it will match just about anything and allows you to switch between two Tx antennas.

I don't have enough experience with the second Rx, but it should be a definite aid in keeping on top of the pileup "up 2" and the QRM on your Tx freq... I know, that never happens ;o)

Have fun!
