Sony MDR series headphones for KX1

Saw a mention on this list as well as in the manual about these
headphones. Does anyone have any experience or recommendations with
specific MDR models from Sony. I know I can look at the dB/mW ratings, but
sometimes that doesn't tell the whole story (e.g., comfort,
noise-canceling, etc.).

Here is a review of the MDR-NC50 -- They say its pretty good but apparently
needs some oomph to drive them and not great for MP3 players which don't
have a lot of output:

I'd love a nice pair of noise canceling headphones that can be used on my K2
and MP3 player -- anyone have any ideas.

I own a really old pair of MDR-7506's that must be at
least 10 years old now.

I use them for DJ'n and love them but I wouldn't want
to use them for my KX1.

They probably would draw too much power.

I bought recently a pair of Bose headphones for my
iPod because I was working in a data center and the
fan noise is REALLY loud. At first I was looking for
noise canceling headphones but I didn't like any of
them I tried and I got a pair of Bose over ear
headphones like these:

I HIGHLY recommend them. They are very lightweight,
and  sound awesome. They also almost seal around your
ears making them pretty good in noisy areas.

They aren't the cheapest thing in the world, but I
would take them over lots of other headphones I have
used, including AKG sealed studio headphones, and the
only other style I've used that I liked better were a
friends pair of Sony ear buds but they costed like
$400.

The phones I use for listening to music (classical) on my Zune music
player are Sennheiser HD 485s. I have never tried them on the radio.

With the K2 I use a Plantronics gaming headset. This looks very smart
with a fold-down boom mic. With 5V supplied to the mic input via a
resistor this gives ample output to drive the K2 and open the VOX.
Though I only run QRP my antenna is in the loft right above my head
and I have not experienced any RF feedback. More at

Another isolation type headphone that I occasionally use while mixing
live sound is the Extreme Isolation Headphone.
It dramatically cuts down on outside noise.

I had a set of the first gen Bose noise cancelling headphones and flew
many many miles with them. They were a godsend ... but the bulk
made them a nuisance.

About two years ago, I went to sealed in-ear buds. These aren't
active noise cancelling, but instead make an excellent seal
in the ear canal and put the driver beyond the seal. Mine are
Etymotics 6i, which were specifically aimed at the iPod and other
MP3 players that don't have a lot of drive. They coil up into a
padded envelope that's 2" x 2" - way better than any cans.

They isolate well enough that I won't exercise outside with them :-)

I don't use these in my shack at home, but have been very
happy with them in the field (I often operate near a
small waterfall).

Shure and Bose also make this kind of earbud; reviews and prices
are all up and down the range. I've only used these and am happy
with the price/performance tradeoff.
