Spurious tone on K2

Kenneth Moorman
I have K2 #4456 that is generating a tone starting at 14360.66 kHz and ending at 14365.65 kHz.  The tone is adjustable by both AF and RF gain controls, is not a function of which antenna is selected, or any antenna connected.  It is steady in amplitude at 30 db over S9, and gradually rises in pitch as the receiver is tuned through the range stated, starting about 800 Hz to probably over 1 kHz.

The K2 is equipped as follows:

KSB2, KNB2, KAT2, K160RX, and KAF2.

Does anyone know what this is?  I have not closely re-read the manual, but I don't remember anything about this sort of spurious output over such a range of frequencies.  The unit seems to be operating just fine in all other respects.  Any thoughts will be appreciated.

72/73,

Ken, NU4I

Hi Ken,

You'll notice that the birdie in question is well outside the ham band,
which ends at 14350. That was our criteria when selecting what I.F. to
use.

The K2 uses a high dynamic range, single-conversion superhet
architecture with a low I.F. This means that some birdies will appear
somewhere in the HF spectrum -- it is simply unavoidable with
high-level mixed signal sources (VFO and BFO in this case). We could
have used extensive shielding of all subassemblies, but this would have
greatly increased the cost of the radio.
