Hello,
Contemplating a K2 kit and have glanced over the archives but may have missed one on this subject. My biggest concern right now is ruining components. I haven't built a kit since Heathkit days where this was not as big of a problem. Do I really need a panavise etc. and static mat to work on? I have a little discharging device hooked to the ground on an ac outlet that I use during the winter when the carpeting generates a lot of static and works well to discharge before touching any ham gear. Is this a similar hookup for a wrist strap and possibly a sheet of aluminum as a work top all hooked to the same ground? Unable to get a better earth ground from a second floor condo. Any suggestions for a good static free set up to work aside from buying a mat etc. would be appreciated. tnx, Jim/k2hn _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Jim,
I built my K2 on my kitchen table in my apartment (I was single at the time so I could get away with having electronics sprawled on the table for months on end - my kitchen was never used when I was a bachelor hehe). The only anti static protection I had was a wrist strap clamped onto an outlet screw. I really only used it when handling IC's. My K2 works fine with no problems. Just make sure you have a good soldering iron - something temperature controlled. I have an old weller soldering station with a 700 degree tip I bought of ebay for 35 bucks. It works great. 73, James KB2FCV -----Original Message----- From: Jim and Carol <[hidden email]> To: [hidden email] Sent: Mon, 5 Jun 2006 17:01:16 -0400 Subject: [Elecraft] Static Hello, Contemplating a K2 kit and have glanced over the archives but may have missed one on this subject. I built my K2 with no static precautions other than touching an earthed metal power supply case every so often, especially after moving away and returning to my seat. No problems for me.
