Stereo phone plug on back of K3

Phil Hystad-3
Back around the time I got my K3 (serial number #3799) there were several other K3 owners who had problems (like shorted audio circuit or something like that) when they put a mono 3.5 mm plug into the stereo rear panel phones outlet.

I remember the warning:  use stereo only for rear panel phones.

Was this ever changed so that you can now (accidentally maybe) plug a mono into the stereo and everything would be fine (accept for losing the stereo channels in your ears).

I have not done this but the question was raised when I was chatting with a new K3 owner.

The headphone jack is not the issue, it was the SPEAKER jack.
Different amplifiers.  I haven't seen a mono plug on a headphones set in
a long time.
