Strange K3 Utility Behavior

Having suffered COM port irritations for years, I took the advice of some on this reflector and bought an Edgeport/4 USB converter.  I hooked it up to my XP laptop, and all seemed fine.  The W2 Utility would talk through it.  But when I ran the K3 Utility, it would find the K3 just fine, and I could select any of the tabs in the K3 Utility except Firmware.  When I select Firmware, the K3 Utility crashes and vanishes.  This is true for all ports on the Edgeport.  When I try it with the KX3 Utility, the behavior is similar--though I can see the firmware tab, when I select CHECK FOR NEW FIRMWARE the KX3 Utility crashes and vanishes.

Does anybody know what is going on?

I have no problem using the K3 and P3 Utilities with my Edgeport/4.  I'm
using it with Windows 7/64.
