Super customer service (as usual...)

Guido Tedeschi-2
Last month, I borrowed my dear K2 to a friend that used an old
headphones with heavy 6.3mm plug and an heavy 6.3mm jack to 3.5mm adapter.
When my rig was back at home, I discovered that the headphones jack was
damaged, because I had audio only on headphones: no audio on speaker,
with headphones unplugged.
  :-(
On Elecraft Web site I had seen than that jack was available as spare
parts, but, at the end of the order, the cheapest shipping to Italy was
$40 (for only few bucks for two jacks...) :-(
So, I have written to [hidden email], asking for a cheaper shipping
of these two small parts and asking for the amount that I should have
paid via PayPal.
At the end of the story, the next day the two jacks were shipped by
Richard at absolutely no cost, not even the shipping cost!
After 10 days (in Italy it was holidays period), I received the parts
and repaired my K2 :-)
So, a very big thanks to Elecraft and, after many years now, its
customer service is still the best!

Re: Super customer service (as usual...)

Don Wilhelm-4
Guido and all,

Actually, as much speculation that adapters may be the cause of the
headphone jack breakage problem with the K2, I do not believe that is
the cause.

I have done "dissection" of several failed headphone jacks, and find
that the little lever that operates the switch when the plug in inserted
and removed has broken, so the switch cannot change from "speaker in
circuit" and "speaker out of circuit".  Unfortunately, there are no
substitutes that are more durable, and Elecraft has not been successful
in convincing the manufacturer that a more durable switch actuating arm
is necessary, so we are left with replacing the headphone jack whenever
it fails.

For those who do not want to replace the jack, you can jumper over the
contacts that connect/disconnect the speaker and put a plug into the
rear panel EXT SPKR jack when you wish to disable the speaker. This is
definitely a "work-around", bu it does work effectively.
