abbreviations. TBD is not common shortcut in CW-traffic. What it means? - To Be Determined - To Be Decided - To Be Discussed - To Be Defined - To Be Done These are the variations Wikipedia gives to-day. In my reply to Dave, I used TBD to mean "To Be Determined".

Yep, in my profession, when I was working with students, WNL may mean Within
Normal Limits or just We Never Looked ! :) 73, Jamie WB4YDL -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Ron D'Eau Claire Sent: Saturday, July 16, 2011 4:31 PM To: 'Benny Aumala' Cc: [hidden email] Subject: Re: [Elecraft] TBD Where I came from (raised on English) it means "To Be Done" (which might include that something need to be determined or simply that there wasn't time to do it yet). And that's the bane of abbreviations. They don't mean exactly the same thing to two different people - sometimes they mean exactly the opposite! So I'll use TBD in notes to myself, but never when trying to communicate with others. Ron -----Original Message----- > All reflectos readers are not insiders of english / american > abbreviations. > Normal Limits or just We Never Looked ! Thank goodness! I was afraid that NL has been split into two or more sections (for SS). My son used to say "PCMCIA" stood for "People Can't Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms". 73, George T Daughters, K6GT CU in the California QSO Party (CQP) October 1-2, 2011 ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Or that can be shortened to "JAA" - "Just Another Acronym".
In selected presentations in my long past, I sometimes used the abbreviation "IHA" in jest, hoping someone might ask what it meant (I Hate Acronyms)! Often it just passed without comment, and that is sad - communication requires speaking and writing so others can understand even if they cannot "crawl inside our brain". I don't know when all this acronym stuff started, but it may date back to the math usage of "QED" at the conclusion of a proof. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/16/2011 7:43 PM, [hidden email] wrote: > > My son used to say "PCMCIA" stood for "People Can't Memorize Computer Industry > Acronyms". > ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
