I like to hear /QRP after the callsign. As a ham with a nice hobby I make special effort to work them. Ted

That's until they are really weak and wasting precious QSB peaks with /QRP,
or they are really really weak and they are sending RP6AN/QRP and I'm copying P6NQ?/R. In a contest, I don't need the weak ones to tell me they are weak or why, I already know they are weak. I always will try very hard to work them, even if the reason is awful, because maybe it's one that I work that the competition can't. Anyhow, if we are going to identify why someone is weak, shouldn't we identify the other reasons? BTW -- I was weak when we worked last night because I chose to run 100w, in protest of CQWW scoring rules that give the east coast a 10:1 advantage over equivalent stations and operators located elsewhere. I figure if I'm going to give east coast operators QSO points, they're going to have to work for them. :) 73, Jim K9YC ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Don't get me wrong on this one. I'm primarily a contester. I TRY to run
rather than do S & P. When I'm running and there's a station calling me that I'm pulling out of noise on my run frequency and they're signing XXnXXX/QRP at 15 WPM, chances are there will be several stations calling QRL? on my frequency before they even finish sending their callsign. I know I have to immediately send R R R QRL PSE QSY or I'll find XY0LID calling CQ on my frequency before I know it. When you call with your callsign a few times, chances are better that I can pull your call out than if you send "/QRP" with every call. Great if there's enough signal margin, a waste of information bandwidth if there isn't enough margin. It gives me great pleasure to work the QRP guys. In one of the more recent SSB contests, there was an Italian guy running 500 mW who worked me (I think it was 15 meters) who sent me a QSL card with a picture of his station (all home brew BTW). I sent him back by email a recording of our QSO. He had a good antenna and his signal was FB. I would never have guessed he was running less than 1W. With a good antenna, you can more than make up for the low power. When you're running a multi op contest station however QRP isn't an option. Low power isn't a good option but some guys do it. I've done QRP in the TBDC a few times but mostly I do low power in that contest. I've even gotten a partial call out of a JA on 160 when running low power (that's no mean feat from the East Coast). I envy the West Coast guys who run JAs on 160. I guess I'll just have to be satisfied with running EU instead :-) I hope not too many of you guys called me this last weekend on 160 and I couldn't hear you. I was using diversity RX with some pretty big beverages on the SUB. There were more than a few times when I could tell someone was calling but I couldn't pull out enough to get a QSO. Thanks to those who kept trying. I know one guy who considers the 1500 watt limit to be a LOWER LIMIT. When he's running less than 1500 watts, he thinks of it as QRP. He's not a contester though. All the serious contesters are strictly legal. Those who aren't power legal aren't top tier guys even if they think they are. I do recall hearing you briefly yesterday morning on 160m and called you, but working that sort of distance in a Top Band contest with 5W into a 32ft vertical over lousy ground is perhaps a little too optimistic... But 34 DXCC including VY2ZM is not too bad a result. 229 countries from 28,000 QSOs on my K2 without sending /QRP once shows that you don't need that 1500W to work the DX.... 73 Dave G3YMC http://www.davesergeant.com ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
I made about 380 Qs in the 160 meter test and worked some at the
superstition level, a couple I used the APF on, several who were no doubt QRPers. I never heard anyone sign /QRP. So this may be one of those things to be indignant about that has little basis in reality. If someone had signed /QRP, I wouldn't have felt greatly harmed. I worked other stations who took longer than typical to work due to being unfamiliar with contest procedures, etc. I was still happy to get 'em into the log. 73/72- Nick, WA5BDU ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
since I was running 100w from my K3

I worked 2 stations signing /QPR during the contest
In both cases it took multiple repeats to get the full call and the Contact would have been quicker for all concerned had they not sent /QRP each time and just sent their call a few more times In both cases I was happy to work them, after the first thousand fresh QSO's are fairly slim pickings in the CQWW160m contest Sometimes when I am feeling 'ratty' and someone insists of signing /QRP on each over I respond by signing ei6iz/QRO Over the years I have had many enjoyable QSO's with QRP stations, I hear well here as I am in a rural location with fairly decent antennas and I enjoy working other stations regardless of power level I am happy to work QRP stations but signing /QRP is pointless and will not make me more likely to expend effort digging you out of a pileup On 31/01/2011 18:37, Nick-WA5BDU wrote: > I made about 380 Qs in the 160 meter test and worked some at the > superstition level, a couple I used the APF on, several who were no > doubt QRPers. > > I never heard anyone sign /QRP. Brendan,
I agree with you entirely regarding the appendage /QRP. It is a pain in the ass and I do not like needing to add it to my log. If I go QRP and I am thinking of it the difference is that I have good antennas. Some less fortunate hams are very limited in their antennas and operate higher power levels to compensate. Maybe there should be another class called "QRP and a hank of wire ten feet of the deck". QRP is good but signing /QRP is not. QRP is a great area for Home Brewing and wonderful for portable work. I am not anti-QRP but hate the appendage! For that matter if I am going to be a real old man, I do not care for special call signs that are artificially constructed. 73 Doug EI10000MORSE / EI2CN -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Brendan Minish Sent: 31 January 2011 18:59 To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Take the plung! Folks - Let's end this thread.
Signing /QRP has been in use by many, and debated by many, for an eternity. No need to take it too seriously. :-) In any case, please take the /QRP discussion off list. 73, Eric WA6HHQ Elecraft List Modulator (+moderator) On 1/31/2011 12:07 PM, Doug Turnbull wrote: > Brendan, > I agree with you entirely regarding the appendage /QRP.<snip> ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Doug,
I couldn't have said it better myself. QRP is good, signing "/QRP" waists information bandwidth. Also when it ends up either in or not in my log and the Qs are uploaded to eQSL, the callsigns don't match and I have to manually generate a QSL (which I do gladly). It does have to be manual after all. Right now I have about 130K QSOs on eQSL. I don't chase their awards but every QSO I have is uploaded for those who do. BTW, both you and Brendan are in my log this weekend. Thanks for the 10 pointers. Hope I wasn't too difficult to copy. My station: K3, homebrew autotune 8877 amp(s), off-center fed dipole at 30 meters, 200 meter long beverages in six directions. 73 and have a pint for me, I'll have one for you!
