The Toroid Guy

Harvey Howell
Has anyone used toroids from the 'Toroid Guy' to build a K2? Are his wound better or neater than someone can do by hand (I assume his are machine wound)? Is it worthwhile to buy his? Thanks.

Many people have, including me when I built my second K2/100.

Depends on your skill and patience, I suppose.  They are very, very well
done!

> Is it worthwhile to buy his? Thanks.

Hard to say.  If you love to wind toroids and strip enamel, then
probably not.  If you don't want or like to do those tasks, or just want
to save time and reduce uncertainty, then probably so.

YMMV

I have built 2 K2 and a K1 but when I built my KPA100 I decided to try the service to save time.  His work is excellent, and at a very reasonable cost.

They arrive packaged and labeled.  Worthwhile to buy- depends, winding toroids are not hard, just time consuming and boring.  I was very pleased with his service, and made building the KPA100 a lot faster.

I found winding the toroids a lot less boring and time-consuming than
installing several hundred resistors and capacitors that I could hardly see.

I have built one k2 and I did not want to wind my own toroids so I
bought them from the toroid guy I liked what I received and how they
werer packaged so much so that I bought another k2 with all the options
and a set of toroids to put up in my closet to save for that day when I
can put it unbuilt on ebay and double my money. So I would recommend
that you use the toroid guy if you want to save time and don't want to
wind your own.

Since your kit comes with everything I'd recommend winding one or two
and see what you think.  I agree with Dave that it's not hard, and for
me was also a very nice change of pace.  Along those lines, once the rig
is built it's built forever.  So don't rush.  Take your time and enjoy
every second of the build!  Not just for the sake of quality, but to
simply enjoy a phase of the K2 that's over way too fast.

PS Plus, you get the happy feeling of having 'done it all'.

Joe, how could you say it's boring!! It's part of kit building, the
rhythmic in and out of the wire as you try to keep the toroid between
your fingers (and sometimes have it slip a fall and possibly break),
it's the counting of turns of wire (sometimes many turns) without losing
track, it's stripping the wires and hoping and praying they're really
stripped. Heck, it's one of those challenges I hope to master by the
time I die!

This is not take anything away from the Toroid Guy, I've seen pictures
of his work and I don't know how he does it -- and *repeatedly* at
that.  In fact, I'm tempted...no! No.  I can't.  I won't.  (At least not
yet!) The lure of tiny toroid and even tinier wire beckons me, Siren
like, and I hope not to crash on her shoals!

Winding the toroids was the only part of building
my K2 that I could share with my wife - while watching
DVDs.  I wound them all at once, labelling them with
tape on one of the wires.
I had much more of a feeling of achievement when
I soldered in the last 'Monolithic Cap. "103"'.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question about the toroid guy. Yes
Mike I know what you mean. I wound the coils for a T1, K1, KX1, and K2 so
far but I have another K2 due to arrive this AM. My first K2(#5022) took
about 2.5 months to build because I took my time. I did take my time winding
the coils and I scraped the leads clean and had no trouble with the solder
joints on them. I have the K2 on the air SSB and it is performing perfectly.
I think I will probably go with the toroid guy for the second K2. I want it
to be the absolute best build I can do so it may take even longer.

Hi Harvey,

I think the Toroid Guy offers an outstanding value.  I can and have wound
Toroids and it ain't rocket science, but some of those little fellas are
beginning to challenge my aged dexterity and eyesight.  Add that to the
confidence in his work and the money was (IMHO) well spent.
