Thermistor board

dave.wilburn
Either I am missing something or this is just crazy.  I have the board
made up, put down in place and soldered, but I don't see any way I am
going to get any other components in there with out them shorting out.
How on earth is this supposed to work?  Can I put electrical tape on the
back side of this thing or something?

RE: Thermistor board

Darwin, Keith
Build it small, build it tight.  I used a hydraulic press to make sure
the components were pushed down tight to the board before soldering

... well, maybe not :-) ...

But it does pay to keep things as small and tight as reasonably possible
so you'll have some space around the board.

Mine looked tight but things did fit around with no shorting issues.

When I put mine in, I noticed that I had messed up and put the wires
running out the wrong side of the board. That makes a big difference
in how it fits. I left mine as is, and no problems at all with
shorts, though I have this thing in the back of my mind that says I
need to fix it and do it right some day. It is quite cramped there.

Dave,

It's tight, but everything will fit.  Be sure the leads coming out of the thermistor board bend immediately 90 deg to the RF board.

Also take a good long hard look at your solder joints on that little thing.  The holes are not clad, so solder does not flow there like the rest of the kit.

My only problem with the whole kit was a joint on the thermistor board.  I looked at it several times and signed it off as good.  I had to do a great deal of disassmbly to find out that was my problem afterall.

I just finished up my K2/100 yesterday and enjoyed my first QSOs last night.

Yea, it is a mess.  I have one bridge, but I think that is where they
come together anyway (the tail end of three of the resistors right next
to the connector) because I can't get it cleared up.  If I have problems
that are on that circuit, it will be the first place I look.

Along these lines, is there a way to know that the thermistor board is
working properly? I'm guessing one would see drift, but are there more
efficient, quantitative tests to ensure thermistor board function?

Thanks,

Jeff

Probably drift as you say.  If the PLL Reference Oscillator Range test or VFO Linearization doesn't go like it should I'd suspect the thermistor board first.

Dave,

If you look at the back of the thermistor board, there is one place where 3
resistors come together just above pins 4 and 5, those are connected
together.  OTOH, a bit toward the right of that point you will see two
resistors with the ends pointing at each other and the PC traces are quite
close together - those should NOT be connected, it is easy to create a
solder bridge at that point.  If you want a resistance check, read the value
between pins 5 and 6 - if it is zero, you have the solder bridge.

RE: Thermistor board

Don Wilhelm-3
In reply to this post by Jeff Kinzli
Jeff,

If the PLL/VCO works, in all likelyhood, the thermistor board is
functioning.  If one wants to know how well it is working, drift
measurements would have to be made after the K2 is assembled and tested in
all other aspects.  Making drift measurements is a tedious endeavor and to
assure good measurements should be done in an environmental chamber.
Experimental Methods in RF Design has a nice article showing how to make a
small environmental chamber from a picnic cooler and a light bulb.

Don W3FPR

I made my wife a bread proofing box from two 27 inch
television boxes, Styrofoam tiles, lots of duct tape,
a 180 Watt hair styler that has its own fan, relay,
MC68705, DS1620 and a control panel that lets her set
it to 80 F or, if the ambient temperature is less than
40 F, such as it is now, 40 F.
I'm planning to use a Peltier device in the future
to allow it to go down to 40 F when the ambient
temperature is above 40 F.
