Time for the KPA-1500

>Yes, it *has* to be solid state. It would be complete insanity for Elecraft

Agreed - a new tube design would be moving in the opposite direction on
the technological timeline.

I operated the ARRL DX contest with K3/AL80BQ (QSK). Bandhopping was
slowed by the need to tune the amp each time but I knew this going in and
preferred it then and now to what the KPA500 offers at its cost.

But for a 1500 watt amp w/o the need to tune - I think I could
mentally/financially justify the "need".

Re: Time for the KPA-1500

Solid State is great for instant on.   Cooling seems to be a problem and
requires lots of fans with their noise. How many solid state amplifiers
could take the brick on the key approach that Alpha is proud of?  This seems
unnecessary until you start repeating CQ calls in a contest and your power
is reduced by a third.  It also seems to be the case that many solid state
amplifiers are less tolerant of higher SWR. The problem is go solid state
but to keep noise down and retain robustness!   Maybe we are not yet there
with our semiconductor technology?   In the meantime one waits for the
valves to warm and gets roasted in the shack.
